Austria and the Netherlands were each able to walk away with a victory after their first match of the tournament. Netherlands was close to being upset by a tough and physical Ukraine team, but they were able to hold on for a 3-2 win. Austria was able to pick up a 3-1 win over North Macedonia after they scored two goals in the final few minutes and cruised the rest of the way. Both teams are riding high in the group but what’s the best bet for this matchup?

The Netherlands are -195 favourites to win on the soccers odds.  Austria is a +446 underdog and a draw is +318.

The Over 2.5 goals is favoured at -141 for this one, with the Under at +105.  On ‘draw no bet’ the Netherlands jumps to -455 and Austria is at +285.  Memphis Depay of the Netherlands is a +400 favourite to score the game’s first goal and a +113 favourite to score at any point in the game.  These teams are the two favourites in Group D.  The Netherlands is a -435 favourite to win the group, with Austria at +338.

Netherlands

In their opener, the Netherlands looked like they belonged as the favourites of their group in some ways. In the first half against Ukraine, they were able to completely dominate the ball while barely making any small mental mistakes. They were able to eventually build up a 2-0 lead and get control of the game. The challenge was that they blew it in one of the first drama-filled games of the tournament. A few of their defenders got lazy towards the end of the game and Ukraine picked up two late goals. Netherlands was up 2-0 in the 75th minute before giving up the lead, but they eventually battled back to earn the 3-2 win.

This squad is easily one of the most talented in Group D and they have tremendous upside moving forward. If they are able to generate more scoring opportunities and avoid giving up anything easy towards the end of the game, we could see them take down Austria and nab their second consecutive win.

Austria

Even though Austria finished in last place in their group during Euro 2016, a year which didn’t see them win a single game, they came out and emerged victorious against North Macedonia to open Euro 2020. That’s already made this tournament a success for them. They played well throughout the entire game but did have a difficult time matching the intensity of North Macedonia at certain points in the contest. It seems as though their defence panicked at times when the opposing team got a big break down the field, something that can’t happen if they plan on beating the better teams in their group. These types of lapses are ok against North Macedonia but will cost them against the top teams like the Netherlands, who could cause tons of problems for Austria if they aren’t able to sit back and play calmly.

Austria is going to get some opportunities in this game but they have to make them count. Marcel Sabitzer seemed like he was flying all over the field early in the contest, providing a massive spark to his teammates and shifting momentum in their direction. Sabitzer could be a big name to watch if Austria is able to take down the Netherlands in this matchup.
