Juventus vs. Galatasaray UEFA Champions League: Playoff Preview and Prediction
Wednesday afternoon concludes the Champions League playoff round second leg, with the Round of 16 on the horizon. Juventus have their hands full with a strenuous three-goal deficit to overcome after letting in five from Galatasaray. The Turkish club currently holds all the aces, but will need to stay level-headed for 90 full minutes in away territory.
Juventus vs. Galatasaray UEFA Champions League playoff round odds and betting trends
Juventus have only won this fixture once out of seven games, dating back to September 2003 in the Champions League group stage. In total, there have been three draws, with Galatasaray winning the last two meetings (2014 and 2026). If the Italians fall to the Turkish squad here, it’ll be Juve’s second time failing to make the round of 16 in three years after qualifying 15 times since 2003/04.
The host Italians hold significant -195 favoured odds to win this Champions League matchup. The Super Lig visitors are massive +450 underdogs despite winning the first leg 5-2 and having historical dominance in this fixture, with a draw set for +400 odds.
Juventus
Juventus has won 13 Serie A games this season to hold onto fifth place, but they haven’t won for five straight games in all competitions, with their last win on February 1. They lost to Inter Milan in the league, then Galatasaray after allowing five goals and suffering a 67th-minute red card, then went scoreless 2-0 to Como on Saturday. They have an underwhelming -9 goal differential in their last five games, and if they exit the competition here, they won’t be able to win any hardware this season after exiting the Coppa Italia quarterfinals on February 5.
The Vecchia Signora will need to go full throttle on Wednesday to have any chance of advancing, which won’t be easy with three goals needed to send the game to extra time. Jonathan David (five goals in Serie A) could be a difference maker as he leads the game in anytime goalscoring odds at +110. Kenan Yildiz follows up at +130 odds to score as the team’s top finisher in the Italian League with eight goals so far. Weston McKennie may need to pull off some magic as well, and continues to lead his team in UCL goals with a potential fourth of the tournament tomorrow at +185.
Galatasaray
Galatasaray is looking robust in their domestic and international play this year as they lead the Turkish league with a goal differential of 38. Disappointingly, their five-game undefeated streak in all competitions ended with their most recent game ending in a 2-0 defeat to Konyaspor. Still, though, they’ve found 16 goals in their last five games in all competitions, and downed Liverpool 1-0 and tied Atletico 1-1 recently this season.
Galatasaray has a massive advantage heading into this one, and really only needs to defend for 90 minutes with two goals of leeway. But the team boasts six separate goal scorers on the Super Lig charts with five goals or more, including Victor Osimhen (nine in league, six in the UCL) and Mauro Icardi (13) both projected to score at +180 and +280 odds, respectively.
UEFA Champions League playoff round prediction: Who will win Juventus vs. Galatasaray?
It’s important to note that only four teams in UEFA Champions League history have overcome a three-goal or greater deficit to advance from a knockout stage.
While Juventus being at home provides a huge advantage due to their comfort level at the Allianz and Galatasaray’s inconsistency away, the Italians will also have to do without major personnel, specifically Juan Cabal on suspension, as well as Dusan Vlahovic, Arkadiusz Milik, Bremer, and Emil Holm, all with injuries.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Galatasaray will be able to pull off defending a three-goal lead. All they need is one goal, and the game will be nearly over, and even if Juve were to score, it would have to be two quick, early goals to pose any threat. I can see Juventus winning this particular matchup at home, maybe 2-1, but I don’t expect the Italians to pull off the comeback.
