Team England

The Three Lions have taken a ton of action to win the World Cup – then again, they always do – and they looked the part of a contender in their opener, a 6-2 rout of Iran. Jude Bellingham (35^th minute) Bukayo Saka (43^rd and 62^nd), Raheem Sterling (first-half stoppage time), Marcus Rashford (71st) and Jack Grealish (90th) had the goals. Rashford and Grealish were both substitutes. Star Harry Kane injured his ankle early in the match but will be good to play here. Kane has scored 51 goals in 76 appearances for the Three Lions, two behind Wayne Rooney’s record of 53. Harry Maguire was subbed out after feeling ill but also will be ready. Defenceman Kyle Walker will be available to play for what would be his first match since groin surgery in October. Should England win, it would be assured of a spot in the knockout round.

Team USA

The Americans dominated the first half of their opening match against Wales, including a 36^th-minute goal by Timothy Weah, but didn’t look the same in the second half and had to settle for a 1-1 draw in part due to a careless penalty by Walker Zimmerman that led to the tying goal in the 82^nd minute. In the current format of the World Cup, dating to 1998, teams that have drawn their opening match have gone on to advance 59 per cent of the time. Even a draw here would be huge for Team USA’s chances of advancing with a match against Iran up next. Sergino Dest and Weston McKennie, who were both substituted against Wales due to injury, are available against England.
