Czech Republic

The Czechs, ranked 40^th in the world were big underdogs in the Round of 16 vs. the Netherlands but were 2-0 upset winners – the only loss so far in this tournament for the Czech Republic was 1-0 to England in the group stage. The Netherlands’ Matthijs de Ligt was shown a red card in the 52^nd minute, which put the Dutch down to 10 men. The Czechs capitalized as Tomás Holes scored in the 68^th minute and Patrik Schick added the clincher in the 80^th to lead his country to the quarter-finals of this event for the first time since 2012 (last reached semis in 2004).

Schick is tied for second in this tournament with four goals behind the five of Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, which has been eliminated. The last time a Czech player won the Golden Boot at the European Championships was in 2004 when Milan Baros scored five goals. Left-back Jan Boril was suspended for the Dutch match but will be able to play in this one.

Denmark

The Danes, ranked 10^th in the world, were very impressive in the Round of 16 with a 4-0 rout of Wales and now have two wins and two losses at Euro 2020. It was their second straight match scoring four goals after trouncing Russia 4-1 in the final group stage match to earn a spot in the knockout round. Kasper Dolberg had goals in the 27^th and 48^th minutes vs. the Welsh, while Joakim Maehle added one in the 88^th minute and Martin Braithwaite the finale in injury stoppage time. Yussuf Poulsen missed the match injured and Daniel Wass was ill, and their status is TBA. Poulsen is the side’s favoured anytime scorer for this match at +240, so clearly oddsmakers expect him to play.

It’s the first time in the European Championship quarter-finals for Denmark since 2004 (last reached semis in 1992 on the way to winning the tournament). The country remains without midfielder Christian Eriksen after he suffered a terrifying on-field cardiac arrest in the first half of Denmark’s opening match ion June 12. He’s recovering at home.
