It was a much closer match than the Canadian side hoped for, but Canada managed to squeak by with a 1-0 win over Cameroon in their first matchup of the Women’s World Cup. It won’t get any easier for Canada now as they face New Zealand on Saturday, a team that had it’s own close game against the 8th ranked Netherlands earlier in the week.

Thanks to very tightly fought battles in their first games, the odds have also tightened up between Canada and New Zealand. As of this writing, Canada is the -246 favorite to get their second win of the tournament against the Football Ferns. The 19th ranked New Zealand side are +665 underdogs against the 5th ranked Canadian team.

Canada

Thanks to a header by Kadeisha Buchanan, Canada pulled off a 1-0 win on Monday over the 46th ranked Cameroon. Anyone expecting Canada to do better against the Cameroon players wasn’t prepared to see the Cameroon side defend as well as they did.

It wasn’t that the Canadians didn’t have their chances, either. They had possession of the ball 74 percent of the time and had 12 more shots on the net. Does this bode well for the team that was expected to have a fairly easy go of it in the group stage?

One advantage Canada may have in this matchup is the presence of Tom Sermanni as the coach of the Football Ferns. He spent a year with the Canadian team as an assistant coach and was with the team for the 2015 World Cup.

The 19th ranked New Zealand team fought hard in their first matchup of this tournament, only giving up the lone goal of the game in the 93rd minute of the match to Dutch substitute Jill Roord. That loss brought the Ferns’s all time World Cup record to 0-10-2, making it even harder for the team to attempt to get out of the group stage this year. They have not managed to move forward in their last four appearances.

Their coach Tom Sermanni had positive words about his team after the hard fought game, saying “I am happy with the performance throughout the game. We were courageous, battled hard and were unbelievably disciplined. We gave everything we could give and tactically spot on. It is a bit heartbreaking but that is football.

“We have to take the great things we did and do it against Canada. We came up against one of the best teams in the world and went shoulder to shoulder with them.”
