Canada vs. Mexico Odds
The first match of Thursday’s Concacaf Nations League event from Los Angeles features the United States as a heavy favourite over Panama to advance to Sunday’s final also in L.A. opposite the winner of the second game Thursday between Canada and Mexico – to advance, the Mexicans are -130 and Canadians -115. Both semifinal losers also will meet Sunday.
It’s only the fourth staging of this event and the Americans have won all three, including beating Mexico 2-0 in the final last year from AT&T Stadium outside Dallas and taking care of Canada 2-0 in the 2023 final in Las Vegas. The Canadians didn’t play in last year’s event, and it will be the first CNL coached Jesse Marsch, who was hired last May and led Canada to a fourth-place finish in the 2024 Copa America. Marsch is from Wisconsin.
“I think it would show that we’ve truly arrived,” Marsch said about what winning this trophy would mean for Canada back at media day early this month. “They know that they’re taken seriously in the region. Even here, talking to all three opponents, I think they have a high level of respect for our team. We certainly have a high level of respect for them. But respect is one thing, and then winning is another.”
These countries face each other for the seventh time in Concacaf-organized tournaments, with Mexico holding five victories and Canada one.
Canada
It’s the first match for Canada since a 3-0 win over Suriname on Nov. 19 in the second leg of their Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal match to advance by a score of 4-0 on aggregate. Jacob Shaffelburg had goals in the 30th and 67th minute, and Jonathan David found the net in the 23rd. Both players are on this roster with David as the team’s +190 anytime goalscoring favourite. Shaffelburg and rising young star Alphonso Davies are both +370 to score. David is Canada’s top scorer in CNL matches all-time with seven goals, followed by Davies with six. Set for their first-ever appearances for the national team are forwards Daniel Jebbison and Promise David. Canada concluded 2024 ranked an all-time best 31st in the world by FIFA and is still there. The three goalkeepers currently on the roster are Maxime Crépeau from Portland Timbers, Tom McGill from Brighton & Hove Albion and Dayne St. Clair from Minnesota United FC with St. Clair likely starting Thursday. A total of eight MLS players are on Jesse Marsch’s 23-man roster.
Mexico
Mexico has reached the semifinals of every Concacaf Nations League but yet to win it. El Tri is at No. 19 in the FIFA world rankings and also plays its first game since Nov. 19 when Mexico beat Honduras 4-0 in the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals behind a brace from Henry Martín to advance after losing 2-0 in the first leg. However, Martin and fellow long-time stalwart Guillermo Ochoa were left off this roster as was Hirving Lozano as he was injured for MLS expansion team San Diego FC in the team’s home opener on March 1. Lozano was also left out of the roster for the Nations League quarterfinal series due to injuries. Raúl Jiménez and Santiago Gimenez Raúl Jiménez (both +230 team favourites to score Thursday) headline this squad with 10 of coach Javier Aguirre’s 23 men from European teams and the other 13 from LigaMX sides. Mexico has one loss in its past five overall matches vs. Canada, coming 2-1 in 2022 World Cup qualifying in Edmonton. The last meeting between the countries was a scoreless draw in September 2024 in an international friendly in Dallas.
