Borussia Dortmund vs. Inter Milan UCL Preview and Prediction

Wednesday afternoon is the final day of the UEFA Champions League League Phase as Borussia Dortmund hosts Inter Milan.

Inter could still automatically qualify for the Round of 16 under the right circumstances, but they’ll need a win at the very least to have a chance. Dortmund will likely enter the knockout play with a 9th-24th place finish, but a loss could stir up the pot in the standings.

Borussia Dortmund vs. Inter Milan UCL Odds and Betting Trends

The German side meets the Italians for the third time ever in the UEFA Champions League, with each side boasting one win apiece as they last faced off in Group F of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage. Dortmund won the most recent encounter 3-2 at home in 2019.

Inter’s odds to win the trophy this year have slumped considerably (+2700) as they dropped out of a top-four spot in the standings, yet they are +152 three-way moneyline favourites on the Champions League odds this week on away grounds. Dortmund, on the other hand, has one of the highest goals allowed tallies in the competition (19), as the 16th-place side enters their home turf on Wednesday as +190 contenders.

The two squads have only ever tied once out of their seven total fixtures dating back to 1963/64 in their first-ever meeting, with a draw for this matchup priced at +250 odds.

Inter Milan UCL

Inter unfortunately suffered the wrath of Arsenal in their last Champions League 3-1 loss, as Peter Sucic netted the only goal for the Black and Blues. The team still holds first place in Serie A after crushing Pisa 6-2 on Friday, extending its in-league undefeated streak to 10 games. Inter still thrives on solid defensive shape (seven goals allowed in the UCL) while waiting for counterattacking opportunities, which is exactly what they will need to execute against Dortmund’s back three, which has allowed 15 goals so far.

Inter’s main man, Lautaro Martinez, still leads the charge with four goals in the Champions League and 12 in Serie A (highest). The Argentine International is marked to score anytime at +190 odds, with teammates Marcus Thuram (+200) and Ange-Yoan Bonny (+220) surely acting as crucial components to breaking down Dortmund’s vulnerable defensive line with their pace.

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund are doing exceptionally well in the Bundesliga this year and sit in a cushy second-place spot. However, they’re struggling to assert dominance in the European competition, with their last matchup ending in a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham last week. They are 12 games unbeaten in the Bundesliga, although they were knocked out of the DFB Pokal Round of 16 to Bayer Leverkusen and haven’t won a UCL fixture since November 25 against Villareal.

In all competitions this season, the Black and Yellows have only lost one home game, although the side will have to make do without Daniel Svensson as he serves a suspension for a red card from the last match. Serhou Guirassy, Julian Brandt, and Felix Nmecha will be at the forefront of the team’s offence, with three goals each already in the UCL, and are priced at +170, +400, and +800 to score.

UCL Prediction: Who Will Win Borussia Dortmund vs. Inter Milan UCL?

While this matchup is certainly a must-win for Dortmund, Inter will still have its sights set on an instant Round of 16 entry. Dortmund may be scoring at will in the UCL (19) and play extremely well at home, but they also have one of the highest goals allowed tallies in the competition (15).

Given the circumstances and their tough defensive opponents of Inter Milan, a 3-2 result for the Italians could be in the works, especially since it’s the last day in League Phase placements, meaning both teams will be more open at the back in attempts to outscore one another, with Inter simply being more tactically sound and having more experience on their side.
