Argentina

Reigning World Cup and Copa America champion Argentina is No. 1 in the FIFA world rankings and this might be the last major international tournament for all-time great Lionel Messi, who of course now plays in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami and says he will end his career with that club. Although Messi hasn’t ruled out the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, he’ll be 37 next week and has had some trouble staying healthy of late. Messi is the +300 favourite to lead the tournament in goals and -150 to be Argentina’s top scorer.

This team is similar to the one that won 2022 World Cup, with 21 of the 26 players featuring in Qatar. The Argentines are 4-0 in 2024 and beat Guatemala 4-1 in their final warm-up last Friday. Messi had two goals and Lautaro Martinez two. Martinez was this season’s Serie A top scorer with Inter Milan. For an anytime goal Thursday, Messi is -130 and Martinez +115.

Canada

Team Canada, ranked 49th in the world under new coach Jesse Marsch, largely has the same roster as the one from the last World Cup led by Alphonso Davies (who plays club soccer for Bayern Munich), Jonathan David (Lille) and Tajon Buchanan (Inter Milan) – current Champions League winner Real Madrid reportedly is targeting Davies in a transfer deal this summer from Munich. Canada is 1-1-1 this year with that victory being the 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago to get into this tournament along with a 4-0 loss to the Netherlands on June 6 (Marsch’s first game in charge) and a 0-0 draw with France on June 9.

Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau was tremendous against the French. One of the youngest players in this tournament is 18-year-old defender Luc de Fougerolles, and Englishman by birth who debuted for the national team in March. On the first goalscorer prop for Canada, no goalscorer is the -130 favourite followed by David at +475. He had 19 goals in the French Ligue 1 for Lille this past season.
