Milan Borjan
Veteran Milan Borjan will man Canada’s goal as the No. 1 option. Borjan, who captains Serbian SuperLiga club Red Star Belgrade, is Canada’s most capped goalkeeper ever with 67 international appearances. He’s made over 300 appearances in European leagues and the Champions League and he was a big part of Canada’s qualification success. Key saves by Borjan led to upset victories over both Mexico and the U.S. in the World Cup qualifiers.
Borjan has been having another dominate club season in the Serbian SuperLiga, leading Red Star Belgrade to a league-best 53 points, 10 points more than second-place Partizan. He is undefeated this season with 17 wins and two draws and he leads the league with 12 clean sheets in 19 matches. Borjan has allowed just two goals in his last seven SuperLiga matches. His last appearance was in a 2-1 victory over Radnik Surdulica on Nov. 13.
Choosing Canada
Borjan was born in Croatia to Serbian parents and his family did not emigrate to Canada until 2000 when he was 13-years-old. Although his parents still live in Hamilton, Ontario, Borjan only spent a handful of years in Canada as a teenager before leaving to play professionally in South America, then Europe. As a dual citizen, he chose to represent Canada internationally over the more successful Serbian team as a thank you to his adopted homeland.
Borjan made his senior team debut for Canada in 2011 and has been the starting keeper since 2012. As mentioned, he was crucial in 2022 CONCACAF qualifying, with a goal-line save during stoppage time preserving a 2-1 upset victory over Mexico in Edmonton. It was Canada’s first win against Mexico in 21 years. Borjan also kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 upset win against the United States in Hamilton.
