Germany’s first-place finish in 2014 wasn’t a fluke. Die Mannschaft were knocking on the door at the top of the FIFA rankings and they trounced Brazil – to the dismay of the locals – 7-1 in the semifinal on their way to the World Cup glory.
They were upset by France in the semifinal at the 2016 Euro Cup, but have outscored opponents by a combined margin of 55-9 in their competitive fixtures since then. Germany have scored three or more goals in eight of their last 11 competitive matches. Sports Interaction lists the odds of Germany scoring three or more goals against Mexico at +155.
Mexico lost to Denmark (0-2) and Croatia (0-1) in recent friendlies but they did play Portugal tough in two matches last summer in the Confederations Cup. They drew 0-0 against the heavily favoured Brazilians in the group stage in the 2014 World Cup.
Germany
The World Cup holders received positive news on the injury front this week. Attacking midfielder both made the squad despite carrying nagging injuries, but they both participated and looked lively in training sessions this week.
Ozil is the lynchpin of Germany’s attack and a key part of the link-up play between the midfield and the forwards. Boateng, meanwhile, is one of the world’s premier centre halves and just completed another stellar season for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Both players should be among the starting 11 for Joachim Low’s side for the match against Mexico.
RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner is expected to start in the No. 9 role and Sports Interaction lists him as the favourite to score the match’s first goal at +424.
Mexico
Manager Juan Carlos Osorio knows he’s on thin ice with El Tri supporters and he has his work cut out for him trying to get any type of positive result from Mexico’s opening match against Germany. Mexico have scored one or fewer goals in six of their last seven matches overall.
Germany vs. Mexico World Cup Prediction
Germany 3, Mexico 1
Too much firepower from the favourites in this contest. Germany have outscored their opponents 9-2 in the opening matches of their last three competitive tournaments.
