Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Austin FC MLS Preview and Prediction

This week’s MLS action kicks off with some top-tier matchups, most notably the Vancouver Whitecaps vs Austin FC.

The Whitecaps continue their stunning season, hardly affected by the MLS Cup Finals loss last year as they stride forward in first place in the West, ready to take on a struggling Austin FC side.

Overall, the two sides have faced off 10 times, with Austin only ever winning one matchup back in 2022, as Vancouver has claimed six wins, with double the number of goals as their opponents (14).

Both sides drew for the third time in their last confrontation in May, and Austin has never won a home game against their Canadian opponents.

Signs point toward an easy -425 win on the three-way moneyline for the Whitecaps, as the Texas challengers enter the arena at +850 odds to take home a victory. A draw is priced at +500, with the under 3.5 goals slightly favoured at -120 compared to the over at -106.

The Verde and Black’s main issue comes from their lack of sound defence, as the side has gone on to allow 43 goals in 24 games this season, the second-highest tally in the West. 

While other teams like FC Dallas have also allowed many goals this season (41), they make up for it by scoring (47), whereas Austin have yet to hit a stride in finding the back of the net, doing so only 30 times leading up to this weekend. 

The side hasn’t lost for the last three games straight, though, with Facundo Torres helping to score two of the team’s four most recent goals, including a 79′ game-tying finish against Colorado on Wednesday. This was the second game in a row for Austin that ended in a late 1-1 draw, as Guilherme Biro helped bag a desperate 90+7′ equalizer against San Jose last weekend.

However, The Verde and Black will be uneasy without their top goalscorer, Myrto Uzuni (six goals), due to injury. The deed will come down to Facundo Torres and his current hot streak, as the Uruguayan forward will look to strike his fifth goal of the season anytime at +400 odds.

At nearly polar ends of the spectrum, Vancouver press forward with their 14-4-5 season at 46 points atop the Western Conference, after recently blowing out LA Galaxy 3-0 with Brian White earning his 14th MLS goal this year. 

While the Canadian side did lose 3-1 last weekend to St. Louis, they’ve gone 3-2 in their last five MLS matchups, with all three of their victories being three-goal minimum shutout wins.

Jesper Sorensen’s side is second in goals scored (52) in the MLS, only to Inter Miami (59), partly due to Brian White’s lethal finishing and Thoms Muller’s seven goals and seven assists.

If it’s not Brian White leading the charge this week at -180 odds to score anytime, it’s down to German legend Thomas Muller and his price line at -135.

The Whitecaps have only suffered two MLS losses since July, with both of them occurring on home turf. However, with how dull Austin’s season has been so far, it’s more likely the Texans will crumble under the offensive pressure of Vancouver, while lacking a proper response

Austin averages about a goal per game in their last five, as they struggle to break past a mark of more than two goals in a game, a feat that will be especially hard to achieve without Uzuni.

The truth is, the Whitecaps have so much more firepower with the likes of Muller, White, Sabbi, Sabaly, Gauld, Elloumi and other company. With the team’s mishap results already out of the way, you can expect a solid 2-0 Whitecaps win here this weekend as they continue their first-place crusade of the West.
