San Jose Earthquakes vs. Vancouver Whitecaps MLS Preview and Prediction
This Saturday, the top two squads in the Western Conference will go head-to-head as the San Jose Earthquakes (9-1-1) host the Vancouver Whitecaps (8-1-1). While the Whitecaps have continued their success from last season, the Earthquakes have completely turned things around after they finished 10th in the Western Conference in 2025 with an 11-8-15 record.
Both teams will likely compete for an MLS Cup once the postseason hits, but I have a few picks for this early-season match on Saturday that you’ll want to see after I nailed an exact score prediction on last week’s Atlanta United vs CF Montreal match.
San Jose Earthquakes vs. Vancouver Whitecaps MLS Odds and Betting Trends
San Jose are +190 underdogs to take all three points after 90 minutes on the MLS odds, while Vancouver are +125 favourites and the draw has +240 odds. Oddsmakers are stuck when it comes to the total, as under 3.5 total goals has odds of -165, while over 2.5 goals has odds of -190. These two squads met earlier this season on March 21 in Vancouver, and San Jose returned home with a 1-0 road victory.
Brian White (+145) leads the goalscoring market. The Whitecaps attacker has eight goals in the MLS this season, though he has scored in just two of Vancouver’s last seven contests. White has scored in five matches thus far, but he has two goals in three of those games – so betting him to score twice at +850 is more appealing to me than betting on him to score just once.
San Jose Earthquakes
The Earthquakes are two victories away from tying their win mark from last season, and a major reason for that has been the newly signed attacker Timo Werner. Unfortunately for San Jose, the German was injured in their 4-2 Open Cup win against Minnesota United and will not play on Saturday. This will be a big miss for the hosts because Werner has four goals and three assists in seven MLS appearances this season. Although they scored three times after Werner went off in the Open Cup, they struggled to score without him last week in a 1-1 draw at Toronto FC.
As good as San Jose have been to start the season, their results seem overinflated. Looking at their home matches in MLS play, they’re 4-0-1, with their lone defeat coming against the Seattle Sounders 1-0. Seattle are fourth in the West, while San Jose’s four victories came against Sporting Kansas City, Atlanta United, San Diego FC and Austin FC – all of whom are 11th or worse in their respective conferences. In other words, San Jose haven’t beaten a single team at home with an impressive record; Vancouver will be their toughest test yet.
Vancouver Whitecaps
I covered the Whitecaps last week in their game against the LA Galaxy, and although I missed my pick on the visitors taking three points, I was impressed with their performance. They won the xG battle and had multiple chances to take the lead in the first half, but the Galaxy struck first in the 46th minute before Vancouver tied the game in the 81st minute. They had to dig deep to escape with a point, but they were able to extend their unbeaten streak to five games.
The biggest way Vancouver can take over this game is by scoring first. The Whitecaps are 9-0-1 when they’ve scored first this season, and their lone defeat came against the Seattle Sounders in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Additionally, this San Jose attack just isn’t the same without Werner in the lineup; they’ll need Judd Preston and Ousseni Bouda to step up in the scoring department. Vancouver will be hungry after their home loss versus San Jose about a month and a half ago, so there’s an added revenge element.
MLS Prediction: Who Will Win San Jose Earthquakes vs. Vancouver Whitecaps?
These teams are the Western Conference’s best at this point in the season, and San Jose have been one of the biggest surprises thus far. As good as their start has been, I can’t see them continuing to perform at a near perfect level as the season progresses.
The Whitecaps are one of the most talented teams in the MLS, and after losing to the Earthquakes earlier this season, I expect them to bounce back and take three points back to Canada.
Best Bet: Vancouver Whitecaps ML (+120)
Score Prediction: San Jose Earthquakes 1 | Vancouver Whitecaps 2
