The MLS regular season is inching toward the playoff push, and Saturday brings a tantalizing assignment for Toronto FC: a trip to face Lionel Messi and a red-hot Inter Miami attack. Inter Miami FC host Toronto FC at Nu Stadium in Miami, Florida on Saturday, Aug. 22, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Miami sit second in the Eastern Conference behind a rampaging Nashville SC, while Toronto have flatlined in 11th place. The visitors are unbeaten in their last three league matches, but that stretch has been built on draws rather than wins, and the history in this fixture points firmly toward the home side.

There is still plenty to break down in my Inter Miami vs. Toronto FC preview and prediction, so let’s get into it.

Inter Miami vs. Toronto FC MLS Odds and Betting Trends

Inter Miami are -285 home favourites on the three-way moneyline. Meanwhile, a draw is priced at +450, and Toronto are +550 road underdogs. The over/under sits at 3.5 goals on the MLS odds.

Lionel Messi is the main man for the hosts, having scored 14 goals and added eight assists this season, and he is -230 to score against Toronto. There are also five other players with +200 odds or shorter to score, so we should see plenty of goals in this one.

Inter Miami

The hosts arrive in choppy recent form, having lost three of their last four matches in all competitions while conceding 11 goals in that stretch. They were held to a 2-2 draw by Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, with Daniel Pinter and Messi scoring in quick succession to erase an early deficit, only for the Union to equalize. Even so, Miami remain unbeaten in their last four MLS home games, winning three of them and scoring 13 goals in that span.

Luis Suarez has been a steady secondary threat with 10 goals this season, and German Berterame has added seven, giving Messi ample support up top. On the injury front, Micael (ankle) is questionable, Matteo Silvetti (shoulder) and Berterame (concussion) are carrying knocks, and Tadeo Allende (knee) is doubtful. Meanwhile, Yannick Bright serves a suspension following a late red card, and Rodrigo De Paul returns after sitting out with yellow-card accumulation. Miami sit on 39 points from 20 games (11-6-3), and their +10 goal differential is built on a league-high 48 goals scored.

Toronto FC

The visitors head south off the back of a wild 3-3 draw with Charlotte FC, a match settled only by a stoppage-time equalizer, and they are dealing with a serious injury crunch. Nickseon Gomis (thigh), Deandre Kerr (lower-body), Nelson Palacio (lower-body) and Lazar Stefanovic (foot) are all questionable, but luckily, club-record signing Josh Sargent (thigh) is back and played 90 minutes with an assist against Charlotte.

Daniel Sallói remains the offensive focal point with five goals from 40 shots and three assists, a modest return that underlines Toronto’s lack of a true difference-maker in the final third. The Reds have scored just 29 goals and conceded 36 across 20 matches, leaving them 11th in the East on 21 points. There have been some defensive positives on the road, with Toronto conceding a goal or fewer in three of their last four MLS away matches and posting two clean sheets in that span, but a lack of creativity figures to be the difference between one point and three at Nu Stadium.

MLS Prediction: Who will win Inter Miami vs. Toronto FC?

Best bet: Inter Miami ML and Over 2.5 goals (-110)

Miami’s dip in results hasn’t stopped them from finding the net, and this head-to-head has been thoroughly one-sided in recent years. The hosts are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with Toronto, winning five and drawing two, and they beat the Reds 4-2 on the road the last time these clubs met in May.

Overall, Miami lead the all-time series 10-2-2. With Messi in red-hot form, Suarez and Berterame chipping in and a Toronto backline that has conceded 36 goals in 20 games, expect Miami to get on the board multiple times while closing out a much-needed home win.

Final score prediction: Inter Miami 3 | Toronto FC 1
