Canada vs. Sweden Prediction: IIHF Women’s Worlds Quarterfinals Odds

Team Canada wrapped up their preliminary round at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship on Monday night with a nail-biter and subsequent loss against their number one rivals – Team USA.  No doubt they were hoping for a W and the chance to play a quarterfinal match against Germany or Switzerland, but will have to face the Swedes.

Team Canada is eager to turn the tables on last year’s outcome, where they faced defeat against the Americans on home ice in Brampton, Ontario.

Team Canada

Despite a valiant effort from the Canadian side, the Americans clinched the win on Monday with an OT goal from Kirsten Simms. The Americans slightly outshot the Canadians 30-26. Team Canada’s goalie Ann-Renée Desbiens was named player of the game.

Team Canada is now in second place in Group A with a 3-0-0-1 record.

Team Canada’s head coach, Troy Ryan, remained optimistic despite Monday’s narrow loss, emphasizing the value of the game as a learning experience: “It’s a really good game to end the preliminary round at the world championship. You come into the game obviously trying to win but you’re also trying to learn as much about the opposition in order to continue getting better.”

Team Sweden

In last year’s tourney, Hilda Svensson nearly took the Canadians down with a late-game tie before Canada clinched the win in overtime. That close call is definitely on Canada’s mind as they prep for this game.

Sweden’s no slouch. With more players joining top leagues next season, they’re poised to climb the ranks. Emma Soderberg will need to have an incredible game in the net, while forwards like Lina Ljungblom and Svensson lead the charge up front. It’s gonna be a tough battle, but if Canada can stay focused and keep up the pressure, they’ve got a good shot at taking this one.
