New Jersey Devils prospect, Ben Johnson, has been released on a $30,000 bail after the Windsor Spitfire was charged with two counts of sexual assault. The alleged assaults involved a 16-year-old and a 20-year-old, in two separate incidents.

Johnson’s parents were not in attendance Tuesday for his court appearance. Johnson was seen walking out of court Tuesday wearing a baseball cap and white hoodie with just his lawyer, Patrick Ducharme.

“I spoke with his father yesterday,” says Ducharme. “His father Kevin and I told him there was no need for him to come, that we would have him out of custody by this morning.”

Ducharme also spoke to the media on behalf of Johnson.

“I think he feels fine. He’s happy to be out and he’s ready to go back with his family,” Ducharme said. “He’s got to do a couple of things before he leaves. He’ll take care of that quickly. I imagine he’ll be back in Michigan by Wednesday.”

The Windsor police stated that the 16-year-old victim explained the assault happened in a women’s washroom during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at a downtown bar and later identified Johnson as the suspect.

Ducharme explained that the Crown readily agreed to Johnson’s release on the day of his arrest but Johnson ended up spending the night in custody as it took him some time to get the $15,000 in cash for the court.

Two sureties had to promise $7,500 each to make up the total.

Johnson’s case, which he is not required to attend, will be heard by the court on April 16.
