It was goaltender Billy Smith of the New York Islanders who first scored a goal against an opposing team when he put one in against the Colorado Rockies, a team which eventually became the New Jersey Devils, on November 28, 1979.

Since then twelve goalies have accomplished the feat, with Martin Brodeur scoring the most of any goalie, two in the regular season and one in the playoffs. Ron Hextall scored twice in his storied career.

Most recently, Linus Ullmark of the Boston Bruins scored on on the Canucks on February 25, 2023.
