Roberto Luongo cameos in Canucks fans’ tribute song

Vancouver Canucks fans are trying to mend the relationship between veteran goaltender Roberto Luongo and the club through song and it appears as though the veteran netminder is doing his part to let bygones be bygones.

Luongo has a short appearance in a song called “Big Old Goal,” a video produced by NHL blogger Harrison Mooney and a handful of Canucks supporters. The song is set to the tune of “We Are the World” and shows Luongo listening to it on his laptop at the 2:49-mark. Check out the full Youtube version of the track here. Luongo could probably use a chuckle or two after having the tires stolen from his SUV yesterday at any rate.

This is just the latest twist in the rocky relationship between the Vancouver Canucks and Luongo since the Canucks lost Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals to the Boston Bruins. Beginning that offseason, Luongo was constantly on the hot seat and the subject of countless trade rumors as once-backup Cory Schneider challenged him for the starting job in Vancouver’s crease.

Canucks GM Mike Gillis almost pulled the trigger on a couple of deals. One had Luongo heading back to Florida, his offseason home, and deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs was nixed in the final moments of last season’s NHL trade deadline.

His 12-year, $64-million contract was a major speed bump in any trade negotiations and Gillis eventually decided to deal Schneider to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for the No. 9 overall pick (Bo Horvat) in June’s NHL Entry Draft.

“There have been some intervening features that happened,” Gillis told reporters following the trade. “One of the provisions in the new CBA is to deal with long-term contracts and it is a changing landscape, it affected our opportunities and we had to do everything we have to do in the best way possible for our organization.”

Since then, Gillis has tried to mend the bridge between team management and Luongo. He visited the 34-year-old at his Florida home this summer and intends to have Luongo as his starting goaltender when training camp resumes.

Lost in all this mess is the fact that Luongo is coming off a solid season despite all the distractions. He was 9-6-3 with a .907 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average to go along with a pair of shutouts.

Now the big question is if this big song and dance is over with so that he can get back to concentrating on stopping the puck. If not, the Canucks are in serious trouble this year.
