Ottawa Senators Trade Alex DeBrincat to Red Wings

On Sunday it was reported that all the effort by the Ottawa Senators to find a landing spot for disgruntled forward Alex DeBrincat bore fruit. In return, the Sens receive forward Dominik Kubalik, defenceman Donovan Sebrango, a conditional 2024 first-round draft pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick.

Alex DeBrincat Becomes a Detroit Red Wing

The former Chicago Blackhawk made it no secret that he preferred being “one and done” in the nation’s capital. For weeks the Senators tried acquiescing to his demands, while finding a fair trade in the process, naturally. It arrived on Sunday when they and the Detroit Red Wings agreed to a deal.

Moreover, DeBrincat will be handsomely rewarded while playing in Motown. His four-year contract carries an annual value of $7.785 million.

DeBrincat spent only one season in Ottawa. It was relatively productive, as he scored 27 goals and tallied 39 assists for a total of 68 points in 82 games. It was still a far cry from his 41-goal campaigns with the Blackhawks in 2018-2019 and 2021-2022. He’s also something of an iron man, having played in every regular season game for the past three seasons – two in Chicago and his lone season in Ottawa.

The Senators get a few pieces in return. Apart from the 2024 draft selections, the biggest is left winger Czech born Dominik Kubalik. Interestingly, both he and DeBrincat were teammates in Chicago for a few seasons and are now part of the same deal that sees each get traded. Last year with the Red Wings Kubalik netted 20 times and added 25 assists in 82 games.

Donavan Sebrango is a prospect defenceman.
