Oilers vs. Canucks NHL Betting Odds
Edmonton and Vancouver opened the season with a home-and-home in their first games of the year with the Canucks taking two wins by a combined score of 12-4. Both games avoided playing the UNDER (one OVER, one PUSH) and being listed as the underdog, helped the ‘Nucks cover the spread in both.
The Oilers are the tenth-lowest-scoring team in the league, averaging just 2.7 goals per game after being the highest-scoring offence just last season. Pair that with giving up 4 goals per game (3rd highest in NHL) and it is easy to see why the team has the second-worst record in the league. They are still regularly listed as the favourite to win, making them 2-8 against the spread.
The Canucks are currently a perfect 3-0 playing within their own Pacific Division covering the spread in each of those wins and played the Over/Under 2-0-1. They are the highest-scoring team in the league coming into Monday’s matchup with a ridiculous 48 goals through 11 games (4.4 per game). They are no slouch defensively either, holding their opponents to just three goals combined in the past three games and averaging the second-best goals against this season (2 goals against per game).
Edmonton Oilers
After dropping back-to-back games, the Nashville Predators came into Edmonton and ran over the Oilers 5-2 for only their second road win of the season, handing the Oil a second straight loss. Darnell Nurse (2) and Zach Hyman (4) each scored on the powerplay, while Jack Campbell allowed five goals on 34 shots.
Edmonton’s powerplay has been one of the few bright spots early in the season, scoring on 25 percent of their opportunities, putting them in the top 10 of the league. A glaring weakness on this team has been between the pipes, with both goalies boasting a single win, a goals-against average of above 3.6 and a save percentage no higher than .873.
After scoring twice in the opening three games, Connor McDavid has not found the back of the net in the past five games. He may have not fully recovered from the injury he sustained two weeks ago.
The Canucks were the beginning of their disastrous start to the 2023-24 season, so expect the Oilers to come out looking for redemption Monday night.
Vancouver Canucks
Thatcher Demko was perfect in the Canucks 2-0 win over the Dallas Stars Saturday night on home ice, extending his team’s hot streak to three games. Pius Suter (2) and Elias Petterson (6) did the goal-scoring for the Canucks as they improved their record at home to 4-0-1.
Thatcher Demko is looking like an early Vezina Trophy candidate posting the best GAA (1.56) and save percentage (.947) of any goalie with seven or more appearances. His two shutouts are also tied for the league lead.
Elias Petterson’s goal pulled him into a tie for first in the NHL scoring with 20 points. He has notched a point in nine of the Canucks 11 games so far, including his current five-game point streak where he has scored 10 points. The Swedish superstar has already scored six points versus the Oilers this season (1G 5A), expect him to stay hot Monday night.
The squad’s 8-2-1 start is tied for their best in franchise history, tying the 2005-06 team where they finished first in the division. At this pace, they will break a three-year playoff drought.
