Cale Makar
Makar is a heavy -350 favourite. The Avalanche superstar is ninth in league scoring and leads all defencemen in points (25) and assists (19), while ranking second in goals (six). With two career Norris’ under his belt, Makar is a key piece of a juggernaut Avalanche team that sits atop the NHL standings.
Quinn Hughes
Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes is Makar’s closest competition at +400, with the every other defenceman in the league sporting odds of +2200 or longer. Statistically, Hughes is second to Makar in scoring among defencemen with 20 points, matching Makar’s 19 assists. However, with Vancouver sitting outside of the playoffs and Colorado leading the league, it’s tough to make a case for Hughes over Makar at the moment.
Other candidates
The Norris race is one of the most lopsided trophy hunts at the moment, with oddsmakers essentially pricing this as a two-horse race between Makar and Hughes. Dallas’ Miro Heiskanen and the New York Rangers’ Adam Fox are tied for the third-shortest odds at +2200 each, which is a massive gap.
An interesting pick right now would be New York Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer at +5000. The 18-year-old is second on the Islanders with 15 points (7G, 8A) and he makes a great case as it’s typically much harder to be impactful as a young defenceman.
