The Capitals are three for three in the virtual hockey universal with wins against the Blues, Rangers and Red Wings. Now, they head to Buffalo to battle the Sabres Monday night.

Thanks to the creative thinking at Monumental Sports & Entertainment, NBC Sports Washington will broadcast a one-hour simulation game using the popular EA Sports’ NHL 20 video game.

In three simulation games this past week, Nicklas Backstrom has five goals for the Caps. Carl Hagelin netted a pair of goals and added an assist in the team’s 6-1 win over the Red Wings, while TJ Oshie scored a pair of goals in Washington’s win over the Rangers and was named the game’s first star.

The Capitals and Sabres met back on March 9 in Buffalo where the Sabres won a 3-2 shootout thriller. In that game Buffalo built up a two goal lead going into the third period but the Caps battled back to sent the game to overtime. The Sabres need seven rounds during the shootout but Dominik Kahun scored the winner.

The Capitals sit in first place in the Metro, and were one of the top contenders to head back to the Stanley Cup finals prior to the postponement

Prior the trade deadline, the team bolstered both sides of their attack, picking up Brenden Dillon from the Sharks, and then veteran Ilya Kovalchuk from the Montreal Canadiens. With the season in jeopardy it would have been interesting to see if these two additions would have been enough to push the Caps to their second Stanley Cup Championship in the past three seasons.

Buffalo Sabres

Before the postponement the Sabres sat a game under .500 with 68 points and were bound for yet another non-playoff season. Not too many positives in the Sabres line-up this season, with one major exception, Jack Eichel.

Buffalo’s 23-year-old captain set career highs in goals (36) and points per game (1.15) this season. He also made strides as a leader on and off the ice, and his $10 million annual average salary is proving to be very good value for the Sabres. In the off-season the Sabres’ need to address additional help for the young superstar.
