On Saturday, February 22, Alex Ovechkin scored his 700th career goal and made history becoming the eighth National Hockey League player to achieve the feat. Ovechkin is also the second-youngest and second-fastest player to join the NHL’s 700-goal club at 34 years old and in 1,144 games played.

Now the Great Eight has his eyes set on Wayne Gretzky’s 894 career goal mark, and Sports Interaction has you covered. Can Ovi break the all-time goals record? Sports Interaction currently has offered a proposition of that very same question and is currently paying +700 if you have answered yes.

Great One or Great Eight?

  • Yes- Ovie breaks all-time goals record +600

Wayne Gretzky was asked about it during the All-Star game weekend in St. Louis, “I’m a big believer that records are made to be broken,” Gretzky told NHL.com. “What I accomplished, I’m very proud of. It’s hard to do what I did, and it’s really hard to do what he’s doing now. But there’s no question in my mind that he has a real legitimate chance of doing it.”

The Capitals have 17 games left in this regular season, and barring an injury, Ovechkin will hit the 50-goal mark for the ninth time in his career. He is currently 34 years old and if he plays until the age of 40, he would have to average roughly 30+ plus goals per season over the six years to flirt with Gretzky’s record, but staying healthy will be a must.

Next up for Ovechkin is the number seven position held my Hall of Famer Mike Gartner at 708. If Ovechkin goes on a hot streak before this 2020 season is up, perhaps he chases down the number six position held by Phil Esposito at 717 goals.

  • Auston Matthews +170

Speaking of goal scorers; there’s a fantastic goal scoring race going this season between Alex Ovechkin, David Pastrnak and Auston Matthews. The trio have been wowing NHL crowds the entire season.

So, which sniper will let the 50-goal plateau first? Currently at Sports Interaction, Bruins forward David Pastrnak is the favourite to do so, paying -230. Entering play on Monday, Pastrnak leads all goal scorers with 47 goals. The Bruins have a tough schedule ahead as the team continues a road trip at Tampa Bay on Tuesday and Florida on Thursday.

Auston Matthews scored his 45th of the season Saturday night against the Canucks and is paying +230 to hit the half century mark. The Maple Leafs have the easiest schedule out of the three teams. The team will head to the West coast to play three non-playoff teams in the Sharks, Kings and Ducks starting Tuesday.

Finally, Alex Ovechkin checks in only two goals behind Pastrnak with 45 goals entering Monday’s play. He’s paying +295 to hit the 50-goal mark first. The Capitals are off untill Wednesday when they meet the red-hot Philadelphia Flyers.
