Shane Pinto

Pinto, 25, is playing out the last of a two-year deal with a $3.75 million cap hit. Next year his AAV will raise to $7.5 million and run through the 2029-30 season. The new contract holds a 10-team no-trade clause in years three and four.

The Pinto signing locks up Ottawa’s core for the foreseeable future. Pinto, Tim Stutzle, Dylan Cozens and Jake Sanderson are all signed through 2029-30, while Brady Tkachuk, Ridly Greig and Linus Ullmark each have at least two years left on their current deals.

The Senators are extending Pinto after a strong start to the season that has seen him rank third on the team in points (14) and tied for first in goals (eight). The New York native is on pace to smash his previous career high of 21 goals and 37 points, both set last season.

Ottawa Senators

With Pinto and the rest of their core locked up, Ottawa is hoping to take another step forward this season after they snapped a seven-year playoff drought last year.

The Sens currently hold down third spot in the Atlantic Division despite captain Brady Tkachuk being limited to three games this season after undergoing thumb surgery.

Trailing Montreal and Boston by only two points, Ottawa is looking like an attractive option to win the Atlantic Division at +750. Because they have a game in-hand on the Bruins, the Senators will have a chance overtake Boston for second in division when the teams meet on Thursday night.

The Atlantic Division standings continue to fluctuate, with only five points separating seventh place Toronto and first place Montreal.
