Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New York Islanders Prediction, NHL Odds
The Islanders saw the grand opening of their new home at UBS Arena spoiled by a 5-2 loss to the visiting Calgary Flames on Saturday. The Maple Leafs look to rebound from Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Pittsburgh that halted the team’s five-game win streak.
Toronto is a -122 favourite to win on the NHL odds, with a total of 5.5.
Maple Leafs vs. Islanders NHL Betting Odds
Despite coming up short on home ice on Saturday night, the Maple Leafs enjoy the support of 72 per cent of sports bettors, lifting them to -122 favourites after opening at -110. Conversely, the Islanders will hit the ice as underdogs for a fourth straight game, sporting +104 odds. The total has remained stable since opening at 5.5, but the OVER has improved to a -115 bet thanks to support from 65 per cent of sports bettors.
Sunday night’s matchup marks the first meeting between these two clubs since the maple leafs tallied a 3-0 home win in January 2020. However, the Islanders have managed to claim victory in two of their past three home dates with Toronto, and in three of five overall. High scoring has been commonplace in recent matchups played in New York, with these two teams scoring a combined average of 7.5 goals per game over their past six, powering a 5-1 run for the OVER in totals betting. However, with the Islanders mustering just five total goals during their current five-game slide, and the Leafs surrendering just 1.33 goals per game during a 5-1-0 run, the UNDER could offer value in Sunday’s clash.
Toronto Maple Leafs
With the Maple Leafs set to hit the ice on consecutive nights, rookie Joseph Woll gets the call between the pipes. Woll enjoyed plenty of offensive support in his NHL debut last weekend, a 5-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres. However, the Leafs have failed to fill the net with regularity, scoring two or fewer goals in five of their past nine contests. Indeed, some of the team’s biggest guns have fallen silent. Auston Matthews has scored just twice in his past seven outings, and John Tavares has potted just one goal in six games. And after opening November by recording nine points during a six-game point streak, William Nylander has produced just a single point in four outings.
New York Islanders
The Islanders have failed to shut down opposing shooters, surrendering 4.80 goals per game during their current five-game slide. The Islanders are understandably weary after kicking off their season on an epic 13-game road trip as they awaited the opening of UBS Arena. After giving Semyon Varlamov the start on Saturday, the Isles are likely to turn to Ilya Sorokin on Sunday. Sorokin got the hook after allowing four first-period goals in his last outing, a 6-1 loss in Florida, and has been tagged for eight goals on just 51 total shots over his past two outings. However, it is tough to lay the blame solely on Sorokin considering how poorly the Islanders have started recent contests, getting outscored by a wide 9-3 margin in first-period action over their five-game slide.
