Carolina Hurricanes
For the second game in a row, Sebastian Aho was the hero in Carolina’s win on Saturday. Aho finished with two goals and an assist against Edmonton, two days after scoring the Hurricanes’ only two goals in an overtime win against Calgary. The 24-year-old has easily been the team’s best player this season and has picked up 12 points in his last five games. Aho is tied for fifth in league scoring with 32 points and he also leads Carolina in goals (15) and assists (17).
After stopping 26 of 27 shots against Calgary and 22 of 23 shots against Edmonton, Frederik Andersen will likely get the night off on Sunday. Andersen has been a big part of Carolina’s success this year, going 14-5-0 with a 1.93 goals-against average (fourth-best in the NHL) and .930 save percentage. Antti Raanta should get the nod against Vancouver. Raanta has been a solid No. 2 this year, posting a 4-1-1 record with a 2.41 GAA and .904 SV.
Vancouver Canucks
Nils Hoglander scored twice and Conor Garland notched the third regulation marker, while Elias Pettersson scored the only goal of the shootout in Vancouver’s win on Friday. Bo Horvat assisted both Hoglander goals. Garland is now tied with J.T. Miller for the team lead in goals at nine apiece. Miller also leads the team with 27 points. Thatcher Demko stopped 34 of 37 shots in regulation/overtime on Friday as well as all thee shooters in the shootout. The Canucks are now a perfect 3-0 under Boudreau, marking their longest win streak of the season.
Demko is expected to get the start again in net on Sunday. The 26-year-old’s number have dipped this year, mainly due to a lack of defensive help in front of him. Demko is 11-11-1 with a 2.73 GAA and .915 SV. The Canucks have also placed Travis Hamonic on injured reserve. Hamonic is expected to miss two to three weeks with a lower-body injury. Noah Juulsen will replace Hamonic in the lineup.
