After a two-decade wait, the Carolina Hurricanes are the 2026 Stanley Cup champions.
Carolina shut out the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 to claim the Cup and they are among the favourites to do it again in 2027.

Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina put together a historic playoff run in 2026, going 16-3 to win the franchise’s second Stanley Cup and first since 2006. After sweeping the first two rounds against Ottawa and Philadelphia, the Canes took out Montreal in five games in the Eastern Conference Finals before beating Vegas in six games in the Stanley Cup Final.
Carolina is poised to be dangerous again in 2026-27 and they have little off-season work that needs to be done. The biggest question will be pending UFA goaltender Frederik Andersen. Brandon Bussi took over as the No. 1 for large parts of the season and eventually won the job again in the Stanley Cup Final, but Andersen proved how valuable he is through the first three rounds of the playoffs. With Pyotr Kochetkov also under contract, the Hurricanes likely can’t afford to run it back with three goalies again.
Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche are also top contenders on the 2027 Stanley Cup odds. Colorado owned the NHL for most of the season as they cruised to their fourth Presidents’ Trophy in franchise history. The dominance continued at the beginning of the playoffs with a sweep of L.A. in the first round followed a five-game win over Minnesota before the Avs lost in a stunning sweep at the hands of Vegas in the Western Conference Finals.
Like Carolina, the Avalanche are largely running back the same roster next season. Fourth-line centre Jack Drury needs a new contract and there are two openings to fill out the fifth and sixth defencemen, but it’s mostly depth pieces that need tinkering. Colorado’s biggest off-season move will be extending star defenceman Cale Makar, who has one year left on his deal.
Stanley Cup betting trends
- Recent repeats. Over the last decade, the Penguins, Lightning and Panthers have all gone back-to-back.
- Presidents’ Trophy curse. In its 36-year history, the winner of the Presidents’ Trophy has gone on to win the Staley Cup just eight times.
- East dominance. An Eastern Conference team has won the Stanley Cup in seven of the last 10 seasons.
- Sorry, Vegas. The runners-up have gone on to win the Stanley Cup in the following season just once since 1990 (2009 Pittsburgh Penguins).
