The Edmonton Oilers had hoped to use their five-game homestand to get back on track following an ugly start to the season. But as they prepare to wrap up their extended run at Rogers Place, the best they can hope for is to finish above .500 as they host the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday afternoon. Edmonton is 2-2 on the homestand following Friday’s 6-3 triumph over New Jersey, while the Wings come in having dropped seven of their last nine.

NHL Odds and Betting Analysis

Edmonton opened at -200 and has jumped all the way to -225. The substantial edge in this one has more to do with Detroit’s recent struggles than anything else. The Oilers are starting to exhibit signs of offensive life, scoring 11 goals in home wins over the Stars and Devils – but as they showed in losses to Washington and Pittsburgh, they aren’t quite ready to reclaim their throne as the team to beat in the Western Conference. The Oilers have dropped six of their last seven games against Eastern Conference foes.

That trend might be difficult to shake against a Detroit team that has prevailed in seven of its last nine games vs. West opponents. But the Red Wings have just one win in their last five road games, scoring a paltry nine goals over that stretch. From a totals perspective, Edmonton has hit the over eight times in its last 11 home games against teams with losing records, while the Red Wings have played to the under in four consecutive games away from Detroit.

Detroit Red Wings

A faulty power play is partly to blame for the Red Wings’ offensive struggles; they have just three man-advantage goals over their previous 10 games after converting four power-play opportunities in their opening three contests of the season. The Detroit penalty kill has also been struggling as of late, allowing four power-play goals over the last three road games. Anthony Mantha has scored in consecutive games, and leads the team with six goals.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers are guaranteed a certain baseline of offensive production with Connor McDavid on the roster; the problem is, nobody else has stepped up to help him. Patrick Maroon (10 points) is the only player other than McDavid with a double-digit point total, though Leon Draisaitl is knockin’ on the door with nine points through his first eight games. Edmonton has won 18 of its previous 25 games played on one day of rest.
