Hart Trophy favourite: Nathan MacKinnon
MacKinnon is on an absolute tear through the Avalanche’s first six games as he looks to lock up a second career Hart Trophy. The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native has 10 points, including six goals and one game-winner.
MacKinnon and linemate Martin Necas, who also has 10 points, have become one of the NHL’s most lethal duo and they’re a key reason Colorado is off to a 5-0-1 start to sit first in the competitive Central Division.
There’s no reason to expect MacKinnon to slow down anytime soon. He has 367 points in 232 games over the last three seasons and he has a proven track record of staying healthy, so he should continue to produce.
The only thing hurting MacKinnon’s Hart Trophy odds is something Avalanche fans are grateful for and that’s the equally elite play of Necas. The Hart Trophy goes to the player most valuable to their team and with MacKinnon and Necas each producing 10 points, it’s tough to make an argument that one of them is more important than the other.
Other contenders
Connor McDavid
Edmonton superstar Connor McDavid has the second-shortest Hart Trophy odds, but he’s off to a slow start by his standards with seven assists and no goals in six games.
It’s even more surprising given McDavid has made it clear he wants to shoot more this season. This could simply be a case of McDavid and the Oilers working out new systems, so it might be better to grab the Edmonton captain at this price before he figures things out and lights up the league again.
Jack Eichel
Jack Eichel is a nice price at +550. The Golden Knights’ sniper leads the NHL with 16 points (6G, 10A) in seven games and he’s managing to do it without playmaker Mitch Marner on his wing.
The Hart often goes to the most productive offensive player in the league, which Eichel is at the moment, and he’s also separated himself with three more points than the next closest player on Vegas’ roster.
Kirill Kaprizov
Kirill Kaprizov rounds out the top-four Hart favourites at +600. Set to become the highest paid player in NHL history next season, Kaprizov has 10 points (5G, 5A) in seven games, matching the production of linemate Matt Boldy, who also has 10 points (4G, 6A).
Kaprizov is a bigger risk. Not only has he not seperated himself from Boldy, but he’s also a winger which is a less impactful position than centre and Hart Trophy voters have shown they care about that. Keep in mind, a winger hasn’t won the Hart since Nikita Kucherov in 2018-19.
Last 10 Hart Trophy winners
If you thought it was tough for wingers and goalies to win the Hart Trophy, consider the fact that a defenceman hasn’t won the award since Chris Pronger 25 years ago.
