2024 NHL Playoffs Predictions and Odds: Who will win the Stanley Cup?

NHL: Stanley Cup Final-Florida Panthers at Vegas Golden Knights

The most predictable thing about the Stanley Cup playoffs is how unpredictable they will be.

Last year’s playoffs saw the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche and the Presidents’ Trophy winning Boston Bruins both lose in the first round, while the eight-seeded Florida Panthers made a run all the way to the Stanley Cup Final.

So, who would foolish enough (or just plain dumb enough) to try to predict this year’s playoffs? I’m your guy!

Here’s my picks for the Stanley Cup Final teams, the champion and the Conn Smythe winner.

2024 Stanley Cup Predictions

Stanley Cup Final: Carolina Hurricanes vs. Dallas Stars

It’s a little cowardly to take two of the top three Stanley Cup favourites to meet in the Cup Final, but that’s just the way I see it playing out.

With young stars like Jason Robertson, Miro Heiskanen and Wyatt Johnston, along a veteran core led by Joe Pavelski and a true No. 1 goalie in Jake Oettinger, Dallas is easily the deepest team in the playoffs.

The Stars drew a tough opening round opponent in the defending Stanley Cup champion Golden Knights (what a first round matchup), but I see Vegas as the Dallas’ only true competition. If the Stars make it out of the first round relatively healthy, I think they’ll cruise to the Cup Final.

I have Carolina coming out of the East not only because they are a well balanced team, but I also think their path to the Cup Final is easier. A team like the Panthers will have to go through Tampa Bay then the winner of Boston versus Toronto just to reach the Eastern Conference Final.

The way I see it playing out in my mind (which is never wrong as far as I remember), is the Hurricanes blow by the Islanders in four or five games, then take out the Rangers in the second round before reaching the Eastern Conference Final where they will beat a banged up Florida team that has already played two different six or seven-game series’.

Champion: Dallas Stars

While I think Carolina will be relatively rested heading into the Stanley Cup Final, I have Dallas as my Stanley Cup winner. The Stars beat the Hurricanes in both meetings during the regular season and I think Dallas is deeper up front, deeper on the blue line and deeper where it really counts, in net. And speaking of goaltenders…

Conny Smythe: Jake Oettinger

The last two Stanley Cup champions relied on league-average goaltending to get the job done, but I think that changes this year and I’m banking on Oettinger as my Conn Smythe pick. Oettinger had a bumpy start to the year after undergoing off-season ankle surgery, but he finally looks healthy and comfortable in net. In his last 11 starts, the 25-year-old has a 10-1-0 record with a 1.54 goals-against average and .941 save percentage. Oettinger will steal games for Dallas over the next couple of months and remind the hockey world the true value of a No. 1 goaltender.
