2024 Conn Smythe Trophy Odds: Connor McDavid leads the field

When you’re betting on the Conn Smythe Trophy, you need to strategize by looking at the standout players on the teams you think are legit contenders. Auston Matthews might be the best goalscorer in the world, but he’ll never win a Conn Smythe Trophy as long as the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to lose in the first round of the playoffs (sorry, Leafs fans, couldn’t resist).

So, with that strategy in mind, let’s take a look at the top Conn Smythe contenders this year.

Connor McDavid (+550)

Connor McDavid comes in at No. 1 among Conn Smythe contenders. That makes sense when you consider the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers are +450 co-favourites to win the Stanley Cup, so oddsmakers are expecting McDavid to be a key piece of a serious Cup run.

Edmonton’s captain went off for 12 points (1G, 11A) in the Oilers’ five-game first-round win over L.A. and he currently leads the NHL in playoff scoring. If Edmonton can find some team success this year, McDavid could be a lock to win the 2024 Conn Smythe Trophy.

Nathan MacKinnon (+1200)

Nathan MacKinnon was arguably the best player on Colorado through the first three rounds of the playoffs during the Avalanche’s 2022 Stanley Cup run and he’s putting up similar numbers again in 2024. MacKinnon has nine points (2G, 7A) in five playoff games this year and he’s leading a Colorado team that is an offensive juggernaut who seems to score at will.

MacKinnon is playing with much of the same core he won the Stanley Cup with two years ago and he’ll have a chance to separate himself from the pack even more when Colorado faces Dallas in the second round of the playoffs. If you think the Avalanche can go on another Cup run, MacKinnon is great value to win the Conn Smythe at +1200.

Matthew Tkachuk (+1200)

Matthew Tkachuk was a rockstar last year in the playoffs. He had 11 goals and 24 points in 20 games during Florida’s surprise run to the 2023 Stanley Cup Final, scoring three game-winning goals against the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final.

Tkachuk has recorded similar numbers in the first round of this year’s playoffs, finishing the first round with nine points (3G, 6A) in five games. The Panthers have a clear path to the Stanley Cup Final through Boston then the winner of the Rangers vs. Hurricanes and Tkachuk seems to have a knack for shining brighter as the stage gets bigger.

Dark Horse candidate

Jake Oettinger (+3000)

Jake Oettinger is a great value pick to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. Oettinger finished the first round of the playoffs with a 1.95 goals-against average and .925 save percentage and he posted a combined .942 SV through Games 2-7. If Oettinger can shut down Colorado’s electric offence in the second round, he should be the favourite to win the Conn Smythe.
