San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles all made the playoffs last season, and all of them advanced at least one round, with the Seahawks ultimately winning the Super Bowl. Unfortunately for the 49ers, their 2026 campaign ended with an extremely sour taste in the form of a 41-6 humiliation against the ‘Hawks in the NFC divisional round.

Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey are back to lead San Francisco’s offence, while head coach Kyle Shanahan can only hope that Nick Bosa and Fred Warner come back from injuries to restore order to the defence. Will that be enough to take down Seattle and Los Angeles in the division?

San Francisco 49ers NFL futures odds

  • To win the Super Bowl: +1900
  • To win the NFC: +960
  • To win the NFC West: +305
  • To make the playoffs: -146
  • Christian McCaffrey to win Offensive Player of the Year: +1300
  • Nick Bosa to win Defensive Player of the Year: +1300
  • Fred Warner to win Comeback Player of the Year: +2500

The naysayers will argue that the Niners’ window has closed. They have advanced to the playoffs five times in the last seven years with two heartbreaking Super Bowl losses to show for those efforts. A veteran squad could be on the way down, but, at the same time, guys like McCaffrey, Bosa, Warner, George Kittle, Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel may have something special left in the tank.

A lot has to go right for San Francisco. If it does, there could be value on the futures market at relatively long odds.

San Francisco 49ers squad strengths

First and foremost, the 49ers still have Christian McCaffrey in the backfield. When healthy, the 30-year-old remains one of the best running backs in the sport. McCaffrey logged a full schedule for the sixth time in his career last season, rushing for 1,202 yards while catching 102 passes for 924 yards to go along with 17 total touchdowns. The Stanford product is an excellent complement to Purdy, who is not much of a deep-ball threat but is an expert at short, quick hits.

Experience could also be an advantage, especially if this team makes the playoffs. Guys like McCaffrey, Purdy, Kittle, Evans, Samuel, Bosa, Warner, Trent Williams and Dre Greenlaw have tasted plenty of postseason success in the past.

San Francisco 49ers squad weaknesses

From an injury standpoint, San Francisco has been one of the hardest-hit teams in the league over the past couple of years. McCaffrey, Evans, Samuel, Kittle, Williams and Kyle Juszczyk are all north of 30 years old; Warner, Greenlaw and Christian Kirk are 29. Wear and tear is adding up, so it would be no surprise if injuries continue to be a problem.

Warner and Bosa will be tasked with turning around an anemic pass rush. The 49ers ranked No. 24 in the NFL in sacks two seasons ago and were dead last in 2025.

San Francisco 49ers 2026 NFL Season Prediction: To miss the playoffs (+122)

There is no denying that this team has quite a high ceiling. The talent is there – when it’s on the field instead of the sideline. However, the floor is low. The defensive front is a big question mark, and almost all of the 49ers’ offensive stars are injury-prone.

Most importantly, the Niners have to deal with the Seahawks and Rams in their own division. They made the playoffs despite finishing third in the NFC West in 2025, but a wild-card berth as a third-place team is a rare occurrence.
