NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
ESPN had to be thrilled when the 2022 NFL schedule was released that Rams-Packers was on Monday night in Week 15. Both teams won their NFC divisions last season and of course Los Angeles went on to win the Super Bowl. Both clubs were among the Super Bowl 57 favourites entering this year, but just about everything that could go wrong has. Now this game is essentially meaningless.
The Rams visited the Packers in Week 12 last year and lost 36-28. Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes and also ran for a score despite barely practicing all that week due to injury. The Rams outscored Green Bay 11-0 in the fourth quarter, but their comeback ended when Adrian Amos recovered an onside kick with 17 seconds left. Matthew Stafford went 21 of 38 for 302 yards with three touchdown passes but lost a fumble to set up a TD and had an interception returned for a score.
Green Bay is 8-0 against the spread in the past eight meetings.
Los Angeles Rams
The defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams got one of the more unlikely wins in recent NFL history on Thursday night against the visiting Las Vegas Raiders. Not just because LA was down 16-3 with less than four minutes left but because the team’s relief quarterback was Baker Mayfield, who was claimed off waivers from the Carolina Panthers two days prior. The Rams cut the deficit to 16-10 with 3:19 left and got the ball back with the score the same on their own 2-yard-line with 1:45 to go and Mayfield marched the team down the field and won it on a 23-yard TD pass to Van Jefferson with 10 seconds left. That 98-yard TD drive was the longest go-ahead TD drive that began in the final two minutes over the last 45 seasons. Mayfield is 0-22 in his career as a starting quarterback when trailing by at last 13 points but 2-1 off the bench in the same scenario – he didn’t start that game but clearly will here. Three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald missed his second in a row and is question. LA is 1-4 ATS in its past five after a win.
Green Bay Packers
Green Bay has to win out to have any shot of reaching the playoffs for a fourth straight season but even that probably won’t do it and why would anyone think the Packers would win their final four games when they have won just two of their past nine? Green Bay probably loses Christmas afternoon in Miami. There’s talk that once the team is eliminated, a banged-up Aaron Rodgers will be shut down and former first-round pick Jordan Love will get a long look. No sure thing Rodgers is back in 2023 – he could retire or even be traded, although his value is at an all-time low right now with zero 300-yard passing games. Rodgers has told the media that he would approach late-season starts for Love with an “open mind” after a lost season. Rookie wideout Christian Watson has been bright spot with seven TD catches, all coming in the past four games. Green Bay is 3-7 ATS in its past 10 games.
