The Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins were wild-card teams in the AFC last season. Will both get back to the playoffs in 2017? Sunday night’s winner certainly will see its chances boosted. Oakland is a short road favourite on the NFL odds.

When: Sunday, 8:30 PM ET Where: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Point Spread: Raiders -2.5

Point Spread and Betting Analysis

This series is tied 16-16-1 all-time in the regular season. Oakland dominated from the first meeting in 1966 until 1990 and the Dolphins have since: Miami has lost just three of the past 16 in the series. It’s Oakland’s first trip to south Florida since 2012 and the first game between the two overall since Week 4 of the 2014 season. The Dolphins won that 38-14 in London – and Raiders coach Dennis Allen (now the defensive coordinator in New Orleans) was fired the next day.

In their past 10 games overall as a road favourite, the Raiders are 4-6 ATS. Miami is 6-4 ATS in its past 10 as a home dog.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins (4-3 SU, 3-3-1 ATS) played one of the worst games of any team this season last Thursday in a 40-0 loss in Baltimore to see their three-game winning streak end. Miami fans have been clamoring for backup QB Matt Moore most of the season to play over starter Jay Cutler. Be careful what you wish for! Moore did start vs. the Ravens with Cutler sidelined due to cracked ribs, and Moore threw for 176 yards and two interceptions, both returned for touchdowns.

The Dolphins had just 196 yards in being shut out for the second time this season. Cutler reportedly will be able to return for this game. But it is likely that Miami will be missing a key defensive starter in linebacker Kiko Alonso. He destroyed Ravens QB Joe Flacco on a second-quarter late hit, was flagged for unnecessary roughness and probably should have been ejected. Alonso could be looking at a one-game suspension.

Oakland Raiders

Second straight game in the Eastern Time Zone for Oakland (3-5 SU, 3-5 ATS), but at least this one is at night instead of 10 a.m. Pacific time as Sunday’s 34-14 loss in Buffalo was. Derek Carr threw for 313 yards and a touchdown but was picked off twice. The Raiders outgained the Bills 367-331 but turned it over four times, with a fumble returned for a touchdown by Buffalo. Oakland running back Marshawn Lynch served a one-game suspension and thus will return here.

The Raiders managed only 54 yards on the ground without “Beast Mode.” Instead of flying back to the West Coast and then coming back across the country, the Raiders are spending this week in Sarasota, Fla., and practicing at the IMG Academy. Last year, Coach Jack Del Rio had his club stay in Florida in between games at Jacksonville and Tampa Bay and the Raiders won both. Two Oakland starting defensive backs, David Amerson and Karl Joseph, missed the Bills game due to injuries so monitor their status this week.
