Not much was thought of the New York Jets in the offseason as the oddsmakers set their regular season win total of 3.5. However, they head into their Week 6 matchup with the same record as the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots (3-2). The Jets are a sizable home dog but can they stun the Patriots, who have had all sorts of defensive issues?

New England Patriots vs. New York Jets

Point Spread: New England -9.5 Date: Sunday October 15th, 2017 – 1:00 PM ET Location: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey

Point Spread And Betting Analysis

New England is 2-3 against the spread on the season while the Jets are 3-2 ATS. The Patriots are listed as 9.5-point favorites against the Jets but 67% of the early action has been on the Patriots. The total sits at 47.5 but the Sports Interaction betting trends show that 76% of bettors like the over.

New England Patriots

The Pats were very fortunate to escape with a 19-14 win over Tampa Bay on Thursday night. Jameis Winston missed several open wide receivers downfield while kicker Nick Folk missed three field goal attempts to allow the Patriots to squeak out a win. They have allowed an average of 28.4 points per game this season, which ranks 28th in the NFL. The Patriots defense remains a work in progress and it will be interesting to see how they play with 10 days to prepare.

New York will need to put up points in order to keep up with Tom Brady and the New England offense. Tom Brady has thrown for 1,702 yards and 11 touchdowns with just one interception to lead the top-ranked passing offense in the NFL through five weeks. Brady and company were held to just 19 points versus Tampa Bay so there is a good chance they bounce back with a better effort this week.

New York Jets

Josh McCown and the Jets offense has done just enough to squeeze out some close wins over subpar teams. McCown has completed 71.4% of his passes for 1,020 yards and five touchdowns, but he’s also thrown four interceptions. McCown can’t afford to make mistakes and turn the football over this week versus New England. New York’s defense looked good in wins over the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Cleveland but they gave up 45 points in a loss to Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders earlier this season.

The real question here is how good are the Jets? Their two losses were at Buffalo and at Oakland (with Derek Carr). That’s nothing to be embarrassed about and they were in both games late in the second half too. Their defense has stepped up in the last three weeks, allowing 13.3 points per game. They’ve allowed 20 points or less in four of their five games. The Jets have been underestimated all season long and it’s possible that’s the case here once again.
