The Carolina Panthers are lining up against the Dallas Cowboys this week in what could be one of the more underrated matchups of Week 4. This is the first time Carolina has started a season 3-0 since they made it all the way to the Super Bowl in 2015 with Cam Newton. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are 2-1 after picking up a statement victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football and they could have easily been 3-0. Will Carolina stay unbeaten or will Dallas set them back a notch?

Dallas is a 4.5-point favourite to win on the NFL odds, with a total of 50.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Panthers are 8-0 against the spread in their past eight games played on the road and have won against the spread in all three games played so far in 2021. Carolina has also hit the under in their last six games. That stifling defence they have has been a key contributor to that and could help them hit this total again against the Cowboys.

On the other hand, Dallas has been 9-3 straight up in their last 12 games against the Panthers. Similar to Carolina, they are also 3-0 ATS so far in 2021. The Cowboys have loved the over lately, hitting on it in nine of their last 11 games played at home.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers are going to be shorthanded in this matchup after two of their starters went down with serious injuries last Thursday night. Running back Christian McCaffrey has been ruled out with a hamstring injury and cornerback Jaycee Horn broke his foot. Without McCaffrey, the entirety of the offensive pressure is going to fall on the shoulders of quarterback Sam Darnold. Darnold still has some talent to work with in the passing game but he’s going to be asked to do more than he has in the first three games. Expect rookie running back Chuba Hubbard to get the bulk of the work in this game to alleviate some of that pressure and allow the passing game to open up for Darnold and D.J. Moore.

Carolina’s defence took a hit with the loss of Horn but they traded for former first-round draft pick C.J. Henderson to fill the void. This team should be ready to roll despite the losses and they’re coming into this game with a lot of momentum. Now we’ll find out just how “for real” they are.

Dallas Cowboys

Dallas is seemingly getting it together right now. Quarterback Dak Prescott has flawlessly returned to the field after a gruesome ankle injury last season. He posted a 143.3 passer rating last week, as he and the pass offence picked apart the Eagles. Prescott has been spreading the ball around and working running back Ezekiel Elliott into the game a lot more successfully than last year.

We can’t forget about the Cowboys’ defence either. They were among the worst groups in the league last season and now they are the 13th ranked defence in terms of points allowed per game. Darnold hasn’t really been tested as the Panthers have beaten the Houston Texans, New York Jets and New Orleans Saints (who had an off week). This is going to be his toughest test to date and if he isn’t as on-point as he has been so far, the Cowboys will earn a comfortable win.
