NFL Week 2 proved to be a tough weekend for NFL betting fans wagering on home teams. In addition to losing outright in nine of this past weekend’s 16 contests, home teams were also a major betting disappointment, covering the spread in just five contests, while just five of nine home favourites managed to claim the outright win.

However, high scoring continued in NFL Week 2, generating a boon for totals bettors backing the OVER, which paid out in 10 of 16 contests.

Here’s a closer look on how NFL Week 2 wrapped up at Sports Interaction.

Home Teams Struggle to Cover

After enjoying a profitable season-opening weekend, home teams took a step back in NFL Week 2, going 7-9 ATS with home favourites going just 5-4 SU. Among the home favourites to fall to defeat were the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were outclassed by the visiting Seattle Seahawks 31-17 while pegged as 3.5-point chalk. That marked the Steelers’ second straight ATS loss as betting chalk, while extending a current swoon that has seen the squad go 1-5 SU and ATS in their past six.

Just three teams come out of NFL Week 2 undefeated against the spread. The Green Bay Packers extended their hot start with a decisive 27-18 victory over Washington as 3-point home chalk and have now paid out on the NFL odds in seven of nine contests. The Los Angeles Rams remained perfect with their 33-19 rout of the lowly Tennessee Titans as 5.5-point favourites while San Francisco 49ers look to have gotten past last year’s lost season while opening their campaign with back-to-back SU and ATS wins as road chalk, capped by Sunday’s 26-21 victory in New Orleans.

The UNDER Paying Out in Primetime

While high scoring emerged as the theme of NFL Week 2, with the OVER going 10-6 on the weekend, primetime matches were generally lower scoring. Indeed, an average of just 34 total points were scored in the first Monday Night Football doubleheader of the season, and the total did not top 45 in any of the weekend’s four late games, generating a 4-0 run for the UNDER.

Overall, just two teams, Pittsburgh and Baltimore, have seen the OVER payout in each of their first two games of the season. Seven teams have seen the UNDER payout in back-to-back games, once again led by the Packers, who have helped that cause by limiting opponents to just 15.5 points per game.
