NFL Week 12 Recap: What We Learned

Ricky Rothstein | Updated Oct 04, 2017

A look, now, at some of the biggest NFL football betting storylines to come from Week 12.

How ‘Bout Them Titans? Led by QB Vince Young, the Tennessee Titans have risen from the dead to get themselves into the AFC Wildcard conversation. Not only are the Titans winning games, but they’re doing it in heart-stopping fashion, like yesterday’s 20-17 last-second victory against Arizona. Young led a 99-yard TD drive in the waning moments to move Tennessee to 5-6 on the year, within striking distance of the 6-5 mark that currently occupies the final AFC playoff spot.

For bettors, Tennessee has been a revelation over the last five weeks.  The Titans wiped out the Jaguars as a slim three-point home favourite (30-13), took out San Fran as a four-point road dog (34-27), destroyed the Bills as a seven-point fave (41-17), went into Houston as a three-point underdog on Monday Night Football (and won 20-17) before pushing with the Cards on Sunday (Tennessee was favoured by three). The hottest team in the NFL now gets it stiffest test against the 11-0 Colts next weekend, one that promises to be a huge affair.

San Diego Superchargers. Winners of six straight SU and four straight ATS, it appears the Chargers have found their offensive groove. They’ve eclipsed the 30-point plateau in three straight weeks and – in back-to-back AFC West grudge matches against Denver and Kansas City – have outscored the opposition 75-17. Coming up? A game against the woeful Browns in Cleveland. The Chargers just came off covering 13 points against the Chiefs and will probably have a similar number against the Browns this Sunday, so keep an eye out.

Floundering Fish. Can someone please explain what’s with the Miami Dolphins? The most maddening team in the NFL, Miami dropped a head-scratching 31-14 decision in Buffalo on Sunday (as a four-point road favourite)….This after knocking off the Panthers as a three-point road dog the week before. It’s bizarre to see a team this well-coached completely disappear one week, only to return the next. The Bills loss, though, was more bizarre than anything we’ve seen from Miami this year – the Fish have kept almost every game close this year (last four have been decided by 10 points or less), only to go up to Buffalo and get handed a 17-point beatdown….against a Bills team they beat 38-10 back in October. Bettors, consider yourself warned – this Dolphins team is extremely difficult to gauge week-to-week.

News & Notes…Falcons QB Matt Ryan (turf toe) will sit out this week against the Eagles. Depending on how gutsy you are, you might want to see if you can get Atlanta as big-number underdog – Chris Redman looked good in relief on Sunday, even if it was against the Tampa Bay defense…Speaking of the Eagles, the statuses of RB Brian Westbrook and WR DeSean Jackson are up in the air, as both deal with concussions…What can you say about the Minnesota Vikings that hasn’t already been said? How about their effectiveness as huge home favourites: In the last three weeks, Minny has covered -17 against Detroit, -10.5 against Seattle and -10 against Chicago….
