Is Peyton Manning still fit for a shootout with Aaron Rodgers and the Packers?
Eight weeks ago a Sunday Night Football matchup between Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos and Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers looked like a sure-fire, old-fashioned, gunslinger showdown. Now? Not so much.
That’s because Manning is just trying to hold onto his starting job as the Broncos come out of their bye week.
This might not be the shoot ‘em up spectacle we hoped for, but it’s still two 6-0 teams squaring off on SNF. Early NFL odds for Week 8 opened with the Packers set as 2.5-point favourites on the road.

Thursday Night Football
Point spread: Patriots -7.5
If the Jets (who ranked first overall in total defence) couldn’t slow down the Patriots, how are the Dolphins going to make out? The Pats may take advantage of Miami’s rotten run defence instead of blitzing them through the air, but they should be able to cover.
Pick against the spread: Patriots -7.5
Point spread: Chiefs -5
The writing is on the wall for the Lions this week in London after the team canned offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and offensive line coaches Jeremiah Washburn and Terry Hefferna. If Detroit doesn’t show up for this one the blame will shift from the coaching staff to the players.
Pick against the spread: Lions +5
Point spread: Cardinals -5.5
Are the Cardinals the most balanced team in the NFL? It’s entirely possible. They might also end up as the best team in the league in February.
Pick against the spread: Cardinals -5.5
Point spread: Pick ’em
You can’t blame the Steelers for getting Ben Roethlisberger back as soon as possible, but you can certainly bet against them whether or not he plays.
Pick against the spread: Bengals
Point spread: Vikings -2.5 / Pick ’em
The Vikings are quietly 4-2 and sitting in second place in the NFC North thanks to a strong running game behind Adrian Peterson and a good defence. Minnesota is still largely one-dimensional on offence though and the Bears are coming off a bye much healthier.
Pick against the spread: Bears +2.5
Point spread: Saints -3.5 / Saints -3
This is a bad spot for the Giants’ defence. The Saints are finally finding their rhythm on offence and their defence isn’t nearly as terrible as the numbers suggest – just ask the Colts.
Pick against the spread: Saints -3.5
Point spread: Ravens -3
Can’t take the Chargers on the road after last week’s debacle. San Diego definitely has more firepower, but Baltimore came close to upsetting the Cardinals in Week 7 and the Ravens will be an angry bunch here.
Pick against the spread: Ravens -3
Point spread: Rams -7.5 / Rams -9
The San Francisco 49ers are officially a stay-away team until further notice. Carlos Hyde is banged up, Colin Kaepernick couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean and the defence is positively lousy.
Pick against the spread: Rams -7.5
Point spread: Falcons -7
Your first instinct is to jump at the Falcons by a touchdown – don’t do it. Atlanta has a few blowouts under its belt but this Buccaneers club can put up points to keep pace and have a strong secondary. The Buccs could keep this close.
Pick against the spread: Buccaneers +7
Point spread: N/A
Pick against the spread:
Point spread: Jets -1.5 / Jets -2
Oakland hammered the Chargers in San Diego but they won’t sneak up on the Jets. New York gave the Patriots everything they could handle in Week 7 and newsflash: the Raiders are not the Pats.
Pick against the spread: Jets -1.5
Point spread: Seahawks -6
Last week’s win over the 49ers might end up being a major turning point in Seattle’s season. The Seahawks defence had a shutout going into the second half and the running game got on track with 176 yards on the ground. That’s bad news for a Dallas team which has lost four in a row.
Pick against the spread: Seahawks -6
Sunday Night Football
Point spread: Packers -2.5
You may not have realized, but Green Bay’s offence hasn’t met expectations either. The Packers rank 22nd in passing and will be up against one of the nastiest defences going. While Manning’s a mess, the Broncos aren’t going away.
Pick against the spread: Broncos +2.5
Monday Night Football
Point spread: -6.5
The Panthers played rotten last week and still beat the Eagles by 11 as 3-point favourites. They might be able to play even worse and win against Indy right now.
Pick against the spread: Panthers -6.5
