NFL Odds: Can QB Taylor Elgersma win a job with the Green Bay Packers?
Jordan Love is clearly the face of the franchise for the Green Bay Packers, but there’s a belief that Canadian Taylor Elgersma is in the running to earn a job as the team’s third quarterback.
Let’s look at Elgersma’s chance to make Green Bay’s final roster.

Third place battle
No one is suggesting Taylor Elgersma has a shot at unseating Jordan Love’s position at QB1 and he won’t overtake Malik Willis as the top backup, but there’s a chance the London, Ontario native makes the the Packers’ roster as a third-stringer.
The undrafted Elgersma is one of the rare quarterbacks to go from playing at a Canadian university to an NFL training camp. Elgersma was a U Sports standout for the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks and in 2024 he was named both the U Sports’ most outstanding football player and the U Sports’ top male university athlete.
Elgersma is competing with Sean Clifford, a fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft. While Clifford has a leg-up as he’s been with the team for two seasons, let’s put things into context. Clifford’s entire NFL regular season career consists of one pass attempt in Week 1 of the 2023 season and he didn’t log any minutes in 2024.
Flash forward to this year’s pre-season and Elgersma obviously outplayed Clifford. Elgersma went six of eight for 33 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s pre-season finale, finishing the full exhibition schedule 16-for-23 for 166 yards and one touchdown. Clifford went nine-for-17 for just 44 yards and no TDs.
In a positive sign for Elgersma’s chance to make the team, head coach Matt LaFleur had positives comments about the rookie pivot after Saturday’s game.
“You gotta go back and look at it (game video), but I thought for the most part he did a pretty good job,” LaFleur said.
Elgersma has particularly drawn attention for improvised plays, which reporters also asked LaFleur about.
“Shoot, you gotta find a way, there are two plays that he did that (improvised),” LaFleur said.
The Packers will make their final cuts to a 53-man roster on Tuesday. Elgersma or Clifford will be named the third quarterback and placed on the team’s practice squad.
