Week 1 odds
Dallas opens the season with a tough matchup against the Super Bowl champs in Philly and the ‘Boys are heavy dogs in the NFL season-opener next Thursday. Almost 24 hours after the Parsons’ trade, the Cowboys are 7.5-point underdogs against Philadelphia. That’s a half-point move in the spread after the Eagles opened at -7.
If you think half a point isn’t a big shift, just consider that now Dallas can lose by a full touchdown (and point after) and still cover the spread. Conversely, the Eagles now need to win by more than a touchdown to cover.
It’s been an even bigger shift in the Week 1 opener between the Packers and Lions. This is an absolute heavyweight divisional battle that has seen the favourite flip. Detroit opened at-1.5, but Green Bay now sits as a 2.5-point favourite.
Three-points is clearly a significant shift and it mirrors the changes in the futures market.
Futures flipped
The Packers have surged as new +170 favourites to win the NFC North, leapfrogging the Lions, who are +200. That’s almost a complete reversal of the opening odds, which had Green Bay at +260 and Detroit at +140. Both teams are +650 to win the NFC, trailing only Philadelphia at +350.
The NFC East has largely remained the same, with Philadelphia the favourite, followed by Washington, Dallas and the Giants. As expected, the Cowboys’ odds to win the NFC have moved from +2800 to +3000.
It’s the same story when it comes to Super Bowl odds. The Packers are clearly going all-in on the year and it’s reflected on the futures board where they have gone from opening at +1800 to win the Super Bowl to +1300 following the Parsons’ trade.
There was never much faith in Dallas this year, so they remain at +6000 to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
