NFL Betting Trends and Odds: Week 2 Action Report

Week 2 was filled with underdog upsets, but the Green Bay Packers ended up as the big cheese.

In a week where favourites owned a slight 9-7 edge over underdogs, it was the pups that stole the show in Week 2. All seven of those underdogs not only covered the point spread in Week 2, but won outright.

Having that, no team saw remotely close to the betting support that the Green Bay Packers did last week and after big win over Seattle, this is certainly one of the Super Bowl 50 favourites.

NFL Week 1 Betting Report

Most Popular Bets

Green Bay Packers – The Packers had a lot to prove in Week 2 as 3.5-point favourites in Week 2’s Sunday Night Football matchup and did just that. The Packers used a balanced attack even after losing running back Eddie Lacy to injury and put the game away in the fourth quarter. This matchup was easily the most bet game on the board with more than 15 percent of the week’s entire handle and of that, a whopping 78 percent of bets supported the Cheeseheads.

Cincinnati Bengals – Bettors didn’t buy into the San Diego Chargers hype after Week 1. About 70 percent of wagers came in on the Bengals as 3.5-point favourites at home and the Cats went on to cover with a touchdown win. Oddsmakers have Cincinnati listed as a 3-point underdog on the point spread as they visit the Ravens in Week 3.

Baltimore Ravens – The Ravens were one of the most popular picks on the board as 6-point favourites in Oakland. However, with 63 percent of the betting handle in this matchup, the Ravens gave up a late touchdown in a 37-33 loss.

Least Popular Bets

Atlanta Falcons – Where’s the love for the Falcons? No team saw a smaller betting handle last week than the Atlanta Falcons, who pulled off an outright upset on the road against the New York Giants. That matchup was the least wagered of any game on the Week 2 board.

Detroit Lions – Detroit fell to 0-2 on the year in a loss at Minnesota and barely a bettor noticed. The Lions could very well be back in this section next week after hosting Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

Carolina Panthers – The Panthers saw just a touch more betting support than the Lions but after Week 2’s win over Houston, expect more support moving forward. Oddsmakers had the Panthers as 3-point favorites on the point spread for their Week 3 matchup at home against New Olreans and that has already moved up to Carolina -3.5.

Popular Underdog Bet

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Bettors showed some nerve by going back to the well with Bucs rookie quarterback Jameis Winston after a rocky NFL debut. Almost 60 percent of bets backed Tampa Bay as a big 9.5-point underdog in New Orleans and the Bucs came away with a 26-19 win.
