NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
If you ever want to win a bar bet with someone who isn’t that versed in football or simply has had a few too many drinks, ask them how many NFL teams play in the state of New York. The answer is only one: Buffalo. And, frankly, the Bills are the lone good football the state right now. The Jets and Giants of course share MetLife Stadium (and train) across the river from New York City in New Jersey. Technicalities win bets, too. The Giants will be the “home” team on Saturday.
Because these teams can’t meet every regular season at least per NFL scheduling rules – and they won’t in 2025, either – they schedule one another every pre-season if possible. It is the league’s most renewed preseason rivalry, with the teams meeting every summer since 1969 with the exception of the 2020 COVID season when there were zero pre-season games around the NFL. The Jets have won the past four and lead 29-25-1 all-time. Last year, they met in the finale with the Jets as the “home” team and they prevailed in a snoozefest, 10-6, with essentially zero starters playing.
The good news is that this is in Week 2, which is when coaches generally play their starters the most in the exhibition slate now that each team (but two) plays three games annually instead of four.
New York Jets
The Jets’ pre-season opener last Saturday in Green Bay was also the head coaching debut of former Gang Green Pro Bowl cornerback Aaron Glenn, most recently the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. It was a very successful debut as the Jets rolled 30-10. Starting quarterback Justin Fields played very briefly, completing 3-for-4 for 42 yards while running for a 13-yard TD on his lone drive. We likely see Fields play a bit more in Week 2. Veteran Tyrod Taylor is locked in as the No. 2 but has been dealing with some knee issues, so he may not go. Undrafted QBs Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook are battling for the No. 3 spot and both looked good in Green Bay. Rookie right tackle Armand Membou, the No. 7 pick, also showed well vs. the Packers and is expected as a Day 1 starter. The Jets had many issues last year with Aaron Rodgers under centre, but a weak offensive line was a big one. That’s why Membou was chosen so high in the 2025 draft.
New York Giants
Will we get a matchup of 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterbacks on Saturday? Those were Justin Fields and Russell Wilson. Fields is now the Jets’ starting QB and Wilson is the same with the Giants. Wilson played limited time last Saturday in a 34-25 win in Buffalo, completing 6-for-7 for 28 yards. New York played four QBs, but all the buzz was around rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart, who completed 12-for-19 for 154 yards and a TD while rushing for a team-best 24 yards. The former Ole Miss star is the future under centre but not given a realistic shot to unseat Wilson by Week 1 of the regular season. That victory improved embattled Giants coach Brian Daboll to 5-5 SU and 2-8 ATS in his pre-season career. Another rookie, fourth-round running back Cam Skattebo, was out with a hamstring injury and in doubt for this one. The Giants’ 34 points in the opener was their most in a pre-season game since 2017.
