After coming oh-so-close to upsetting the New England Patriots in Week 6, the New York Jets regroup for another divisional matchup in Miami this Sunday. The Jets dropped a 28-21 decision to the Patriots in a game that saw the home side lose a critical touchdown on video review, while Miami is coming off a stunning 20-17 win over the defending NFC-champion Falcons in Atlanta. With both sides playing good football last week, oddsmakers are expecting a tight one.

Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Dolphins have the one-field-goal edge here, implying that these teams would be dead even on a neutral field. That’s par for the course for these two teams, who haven’t had a spread wider than 5.5 points in any of their previous five meetings. The Jets covered in three of those five games, including a 20-6 drubbing of Miami as a 5.5-point underdog in Week 3. New York has covered in four straight, while Miami is 3-2 ATS for the season.

Sports Interaction oddsmakers have slapped a rock-bottom 38.5 total on this one, and bettors should consider recent history when deciding how to play it. The Jets and Dolphins have played to the over in four of their last six meetings, with each of those games carrying a total north of 40. However, the teams are a combined 2-9 O/U so far this season, with the Dolphins having gone under the total in all five games so far.

Miami Dolphins

Miami’s offense-defense splits are even more pronounced than the Jets’: the Dolphins rank dead last in the NFL in points per game (12.2) but are allowing the third-fewest opponent points in football (16.8). Improving a passing game yielding a league-low 155.4 yards per contest is imperative, but that could be a tall task if wide receiver DeVante Parker sits out. Parker missed last week’s game with an ankle injury and is a major question mark for Sunday.

New York Jets

The Jets have played exactly the way you expected them to coming into the season – barely scraping by on offense, but thriving on defense. As he did in Cleveland with Gary Barnidge, New York quarterback Josh McCown appears to have developed some chemistry with tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who has touchdown catches in consecutive weeks. Seferian-Jenkins was oh-so-close to a second score against New England, but was ruled to have fumbled.
