Jets vs. Broncos Point Spread: NFL Week 5 Odds, Prediction
Humbled by a brutal 70-20 beating at the hand of the Miami Dolphins two weeks ago, the Broncos looked to be on their way to second straight lopsided defeat after spotting the Bears a 21-point lead, but roared back with four unanswered scores to claim a 31-28 win, and snap a six-game slide on the road. The Jets travel to Denver after pushing the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs to the brink in a 23-20 loss. The defeat extends New York’s current losing streak to three games, but have still emerged as a formidable defensive force.
The Broncos are listed as 2.5-point favourites on the NFL Week 5 odds, while the total in Sunday’s contest is pegged at 43.5.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Sunday afternoon’s matchup marks the fourth meeting in as many seasons between these AFC rivals. The Jets’ narrow 16-9 win last October was their first in Denver since 2010, and snapped a two-game losing streak versus the Broncos. The past two clashes between these teams have been low scoring, with total going no higher than 26. Overall, the UNDER has paid out in eight of nine head-to-head meetings in Denver, with the Jets particularly struggling while the Jets getting shut out three times while averaging just 10 points per game over that stretch. However, the Broncos have not been offensive powerhouses in recent home dates with New York, scoring more than 20 points just three times over their past seven matchups.
New York Jets
The Jets looked to be on their way to a crushing loss when they spotted the Chiefs an early 17-0 lead in last week’s contest. But with the New York defence causing fits for Patrick Mahomes and the KC attack, the Jets offence showed its first sign of life since Week 1, storming back to tie the game at 20-20 in the third quarter before Mahomes led the Chiefs on a lengthy fourth-quarter drive that ended with a game-winning field goal. Overall, the Jets defence limited Mahomes to just 203 passing yards and one score while picking off the reigning NFL MVP twice. Overall, the Jets defence ranks 10th in the NFL in yards per game allowed, and has limited opponents to just one rushing TD to date this season.
However, with Aaron Rodgers on the shelf indefinitely, the Jets offence has faltered badly. Overall, the team has recorded just 13.3 points per game during their 0-3 run. Zach Wilson gave Jets fans a glimmer of hope while tossing for two scores last week, bringing his season total to four, and the Jets ground game has yet to find the end zone despite the strong efforts of Breece Hall.
Denver Broncos
The Broncos avoided what would have been a humiliating loss to the hapless Bears with last week’s impressive comeback. It marked the third time in five games that the Broncos have scored 30 or more points, but this team continued to struggle to put it all together for 60 minutes. In addition to their historic loss to the Dolphins, the Broncos also squandered second-half leads in losses to Washington and Las Vegas, and prior to last week’s comeback, they had averaged just 7.3 points after recess this season.
On a positive note, Russell Wilson has finally started to meet the high expectations that followed him to Denver upon his arrival last season. Wilson tossed for three scores for the second time in three games last weekend, and has tossed just two picks. Wilson has benefited from a better performance from his offensive line that has allowed him to be sacked just twice in the past two weeks. Like New York, the Broncos ground game needs work. Denver rushers have produced just one total score this season, and with top ball carrier Javonte Williams hobbled by a quad injury, rookie Jaleel McLaughlin may once again get a lot of touches after leading the team last week with 72 rushing yards.
