Jerry Jones: Dallas Cowboys offer to Micah Parsons was richest for non-quarterback
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones always seems to make headlines and that continued on Thursday when he made an appearance on Michael Irving’s YouTube channel.
Jones said he believed he had come to an agreement with Parsons, which would make Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in terms of guaranteed money in the NFL.
“Nobody appreciates Micah Parsons more than the Cowboys or me,” said Jones. “Nobody has ever offered him more money than I have to play football. Period.”
Long-time trouble
At the NFL owners meeting in April, Jones blamed Parsons’ agent, David Mulughete, for a deal with Parsons not being done and he doubled down on that on Thursday.
“When we wanted to send the details to the agent, the agent told us to stick it up our ass,” said Jones. “Just so you’re clear.”
There have reportedly been no recent negotiations with Parsons, who publicly made a trade request on Aug. 1 after a meeting with Jones. Parsons said the meeting was supposed to be about leadership, but Jones wanted to discuss the contract. Parsons has also made it clear a deal won’t be done without the involvement of his agent, Mulughete.
Jones made a vague statement during the Cowboys’ training camp, saying “guaranteeing somebody close to $200 million” when he was discussing Parsons’ contract. For context, the non-quarterbacks with the most guaranteed money are Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett ($123.5 million), San Francisco defensive end Nick Bosa ($119.9 million) and Cincinnati wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase ($112 million).
Same blueprint as Dak
If a deal isn’t reached, Parsons could be in line to play this season on the fifth-year player option, which would pay him $21.324 million. Jones could franchise tag Parsons later.
“We’ve really got three years to work this thing out,” said Jones. “It’s a basic contract. It’s there to go. I did that with Dak [Prescott]. And we couldn’t agree, so Dak played his last year of his contract, then we franchised him.”
On Wednesday, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said he was confident Parsons would play in Dallas’ Sept. 4 season-opener in Philadelphia.
