Brock Purdy is no ‘Mr. Irrelevant’

Brock Purdy passed for 220 yards and two touchdowns in Week 1, but most importantly he helped the San Francisco 49ers to a 30-7 road victory in Pittsburgh. It was a history-making performance as Purdy became the first quarterback in NFL history to win his first six NFL starts while throwing at least two touchdown passes in each game.

Purdy has gone from the the 2022 NFL draft’s Mr. Irrelevant (final pick in the draft) to beating out Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo on the 49ers depth chart. The 23-year-old shut down any doubts about whether his surgically repaired right elbow would prevent him from reaching the level he did in his rookie season last year. There’s no doubt about it now, this is Purdy’s team to lead.

Dallas ‘D’ Dominates

The Dallas Cowboys made a statement in Week 1, absolutely blowing the doors off the division rival New York Giants in a 40-0 beatdown. Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott failed to throw a touchdown pass, so what was the secret weapon for the Cowboys last week? Defence, defence and more defence.

Dallas hit Giants quarterback Daniel Jones 12 times, including seven sacks. The Cowboys pressured Jones on 62.9 per cent of his throws and returned one of two interceptions for a touchdown. Osa Odighizuwa and Dorance Armstrong each had two sacks, while Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence and Chauncey Golston each had one. If Prescott can figure things out offensively, Dallas could be a legit threat in the NFC.

Wake Up, Seahawks!

Did the Seattle Seahawks forget there are now 17 regular season games and last week’s 30-17 home loss against L.A. actually counted in the standings? Despite Rams receiver Cooper Kupp missing the game, Seattle’s defence was torched for over over 300 passing yards by Matthew Stafford. The Seahawks allowed L.A.’s Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell to each put up 119 receiving yards and Seattle also allowed the Rams to score three rushing touchdowns.

It wasn’t any better on offence as quarterback Geno Smith was limited to 112 passing yards and one touchdown. Things only grew worse as the game went on, with the Seahawks managing just 12 yards of offence in the second half. If Seattle shows up for Week 2 in Detroit with the same effort they had in Week 1, it could be a long day for Pete Carroll and company.
