Giants vs. Steelers Point Spread: MNF Week 8 Odds, Prediction
The Steelers opened as 6.5-point favourites on the NFL odds with a total of 36.5 points.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
I have good news for NFL fans: The inept New York Giants are not scheduled to be in primetime the rest of the season after Monday in Week 8, and I think it’s fair to assume they will not be flexed into one sitting last in the NFC East and probably staring at a teardown this offseason with Coach Brian Daboll and quarterback Daniel Jones both likely goners.
The Steelers are the definition of stability in professional sports with only three head coaches since 1969 and 17 straight non-losing seasons under Mike Tomlin, the longest such run for an NFL head coach to begin his career. With his team at 5-2 and tied for the AFC North lead with Baltimore, Tomlin will clearly get to No. 18. The overall record for consecutive non-losing seasons is by Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry of Dallas with 21 straight. I absolutely believe the Steelers are a playoff team but think they finish second in the division behind the Ravens. Baltimore is a -350 favorite and Pittsburgh +400. They still have their two meetings to go.
Even though these franchises are in different conferences, both have been around for decades and this will mark the 79th regular-season meeting between them. New York leads 44-31-3 but Pittsburgh has won the past three.
New York Giants
The Giants have been competitive for the most part on the road this season but laughable at home and that continued Sunday in a 28-3 home loss to Philadelphia that saw Coach Brian Daboll finally bench struggling QB Daniel Jones in the fourth quarter for Drew Lock but then say right afterward that Jones remains QB1. He threw for only 99 yards in the loss and was sacked seven times but at least didn’t turn it over. New York punted on six straight drives to start a home game for the first time since 2000.
The Giants are winless in four games at home and have scored one touchdown this year. Jones is the first starting QB with zero passing TDs in six straight home games since Trent Dilfer from 1995-96. Jones is also 1-14 in his career in primetime games overall, the worst such record for any QB since the merger, and has accounted for zero touchdowns in his past seven. One bright so far for the Giants has been the defence as it leads the league with 31 sacks, and Dexter Lawrence leads individually with nine. The under is 7-1 in the Giants’ past eight games.
Pittsburgh Steelers
It’s the second straight home primetime game for the Steelers against a New York opponent after Pittsburgh trounced the Jets, 37-10 on Sunday night in Week 7 despite trailing 15-6 late in the first half. An Aaron Rodgers interception would lead to a Steelers TD right before the half, and that changed the entire complexion of the game. Russell Wilson won the Pittsburgh starting QB job in training camp but then got hurt on the eve of the season. Mike Tomlin decided to start Wilson on Monday despite the team playing pretty well under Justin Fields, but it was clear the offence was much better with Wilson – especially in terms of downfield passing. He threw for two scores and rushed for another in his team debut and helped open up the running game as Najee Harris rushed 21 times for 102 yards and a TD.
It was Wilson’s 17th career game with two passing TDs and one rushing score, tied for fourth-most in NFL history. The Steelers have now topped 30 points in consecutive weeks for the first time since early in the 2020 season. Pittsburgh has outscored teams a whopping 104-36 in the second half this season and 46-0 in the third quarter. The Steelers are 8-3 ATS in their past 11.
