Point Spread Analysis

The last time these two teams met was back in 2014, with the Cowboys hammering the Colts 42-7, so recent history isn’t a factor in this game. One thing that does factor into this game, and every preseason game is, who is on the game roster. Reports out of Dallas say Quarterback Dak Prescott will see action in this game after sitting out last week, and Colts star quarterback Andrew Luck (off season shoulder surgery) and is questionable for this game.

The Cowboys are currently listed as 5 point favourites on Sports Interaction’s NFL Preseason odds.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts were without several starters against the Lions, and it showed in the lopsided 24-10 home loss to the Lions. Backup quarterback Scott Tolzien saw limited snaps in the setback, while undrafted pivots Stephen Morris and Phillip Walker shared the majority of the action. On a positive side, WR Fred Brown turned some heads with 4 catches for 53 yards. The undrafted wideout is in a fight for a roster spot, as the Colts boast a good group at that position that includes TY Hilton, Donte Moncrief, and Phillip Dorsett.

The Colts were 10th overall in total offence (364.4) tied for 5th in passing (262.6) last season, and much of the credit belonging to Andrew Luck. The Colts will be careful with their franchise quarterback this August, with very limited play, after coming off shoulder surgery this off season. Also, 1st round pick Malik Hooker (safety) looked good with 4 tackles vs. Lions, but was dinged up in practice (shoulder) this week and was held out of practice.

Dallas Cowboys

If you were a Dallas Cowboys fan living in Los Angeles, you did not see the real Cowboys in the 13-10 loss to the Rams last week. Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and Dez Bryant all sat out, but this week could be different. Prescott told The Fan 1053 in Dallas that he’ll be on the field this Saturday. Prescott dazzled in this rookie season, throwing for 3,667 yards, 23 touchdowns, and only 4 interceptions.

Head Coach Jason Garrett has stated he is still unsure Ezekiel Elliott will dress this preseason, after being handed a 6 game suspension by the NFL (currently under appeal), however’s Ian Rapoport reports he is eligible to play in preseason, and it makes the most sense for that time to be at home. Elliott came as advertised, leading the league in rushing with 1,631 yards. The Cowboys outperformed expectations last season with a 13 win campaign. But because of the possible suspension, and a number of free agents (11) on the move, it will be tough to get back to that number. However, expectations are still high in Big D to win the NFC East.
