Rams begin new era in L.A. vs. Cowboys

The Rams moved to Los Angeles last season and while they hoped to make a good first impression, they fell flat with a record of 4-12. A new era begins as Sean McVay takes over. A number of questions linger, though, such as whether or not Jared Goff is the quarterback of the future and whether or not he’ll have enough help around him on offense. The Los Angeles Rams are currently set as 2.5-point underdogs on the NFL odds page with the total at 37.5.

Cowboys at Rams Betting Analysis

The Cowboys won their preseason opener over Arizona in the Hall of Fame Game last Thursday. However, they haven’t put too much focus into preseason games under Jason Garrett. They are just 10-16 in the preseason during his tenure. We don’t have any evidence of McVay’s preseason track record as he is a first-time head coach. Typically, though, first-time coaches look to make a strong impression – even in a meaningless exhibition game.

Dallas Cowboys

We didn’t see many of the Dallas Cowboys‘ starters in their 20-18 win over Arizona and we probably won’t see much of guys like Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott or Dez Bryant this week either. They’re not expected to make more than a brief appearance.

The good news if you’re betting the Cowboys is that they have plenty of depth. Kellen Moore, who should get the bulk of the quarterback snaps, is a veteran and looked sharp last week. He went 12-of-17 for 172 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Beyond that, the Cowboys have plenty of depth at running back with veteran guys like Alfred Morris, Darren McFadden, Rod Smith and Ronnie Hillman.

The Cowboys depth was on display last week as they fell behind 14-0 before coming back in the final three quarters. Depth will be in their side in this spot again.

Los Angeles Rams

It’s a new era in Los Angeles as Sean McVay will make his first in-game debut as the Rams head coach. His first job will be to revive the confidence of quarterback Jared Goff, who had a paltry 63.6 quarterback rating as a rookie last year. Even though Goff was the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, he was so overmatched last season that he’s in a battle for the starting job. Goff and Sean Mannion will be looking to make an impression on Thursday.

On defense, it’s worth noting that the Rams will be a little shorthanded on the line. All-Pro tackle Aaron Donald is in the midst of a contract holdout and end Dominique Easley tore his ACL and is out for the season. Making matters more challenging is that the Rams will be transitioning from a 4-3 to a 3-4.
