NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

When the TV networks set their schedules for each NFL season, they have to somewhat guestimate which teams will be competitive in terms of the primetime slate. Very little was expected of the Washington Commanders this season under first-year coach Dan Quinn as the franchise was coming off a 4-13 mark in 2023 and rebooting overall. Thus, they only were scheduled for two primetime games, and this is the second one.

The Chicago Bears had the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft and took USC quarterback Caleb Williams. Most scouts had Williams rated as a generational prospect and the best in this class. However, the Commanders might have been the biggest winners of the draft with reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels of LSU picked at No. 2 overall by Washington and in the midst of a historic rookie campaign. He’s the -3000 favourite for Offensive Rookie of the Year, and the energy about the entire franchise feels better than it has in decades.

Don’t be surprised if at least one Commanders game the rest of the way is flexed into primetime. Should Washington win Thursday, it would have a huge early tiebreaker on Philadelphia in the division – and one of those two will win it — but the teams play again in Week 16 in D.C. The Eagles won both high-scoring matchups in 2023.

Washington Commanders

The Commanders should have won Sunday’s home game vs. Pittsburgh but a few late errors and a controversial spot by the officials led to a 28-27 loss – their first home defeat of the season. Against one of the NFL’s top defences, Jayden Daniels was pretty quiet in completing only 17 of 34 for 202 yards with no TDs – missed on a few potential big plays — and he only rushed three times for five yards. Washington was without No. 1 running back Brian Robinson a second straight week, so Austin Ekeler was the featured back and had two rushing TDs. Washington had a season-low 242 yards and averaged 2.7 yards per carry with Ekeler’ 10-yard run in the second quarter being the longest of the day. Kicker Austin Seibert and Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore, acquired last week from New Orleans via trade, also were out. Obviously tough for any injured guys to return on a short week. Washington is 7-1-1 ATS in its past nine.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles improved to 5-0 since their Week 5 bye and have taken all heat off Coach Nick Sirianni. They were dominant on Sunday at short-handed Dallas, 34-6, to take the lead in the NFC East by a half game in the loss column over Washington. Jalen Hurts threw for two scores and rushed for two, and that Philly defence was dominant with only 146 total yards allowed with the Cowboys using Cooper Rush and Trey Lance at quarterback. It was the worst offensive showing for Dallas at AT&T Stadium since it opened in 2009. The five takeaways for the Eagles, led by two forced fumbles and a recovery by linebacker Zack Baun, were their most in two years. That despite Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay leaving with an ankle injury in the first half. Philadelphia’s season turnover ratio was -6 when the team was 2-2. Now at 7-2, that margin is +1. The Eagles are 1-6 ATS in their past seven at home.
